Week in Review April 3 - April 10

Editor's Note:  On Sunday both of my little dogs were bit by a rattlesnake.  My Yorkie actually battled the snake and was bit 4 times.  The good news is both dogs survived the bites and are recovering but it was a harrowing experience and for awhile we did not know if my little Yorkie was going to make it.  Sorry this review is so late but the whole ordeal kept me quite busy for awhile.

This week in review some top marks occured in both California and Arizona!

Arcadia Invitational Highlights - Invite races:

Bernie Montoya (Sr., Cibola) broke the Arizona State Record in the 3200 meter run 8:47.07.   The 8:50.24 record stood for 27 years before Billy Orman (Tuba City - now at Stanford) broke it 2 years
ago at the State Championshiops with an 8:48.53.  Last year Montoya stepped up at the Arcadia Invitational and ran an 8:48.25 for a new State Record and last week.......he broke it again.

Montoya ran the race in his typical style - hold back and wait - then pounce with a killer kick.  It usually works but competitors try to put as much distance between themselves and Montoya early in the race - hoping he won't catch them.   Also in the race was Tuscon runner Andy Trouard (Sr., Salpointe) who took the lead at the mile mark as Montoya moved from the back into 3rd.  With 2 laps to go a large group started to sprint and engulfed Montoya into a pocket where he had to find an opening to move to the outside of the pocket (lane 3) and sprint to the front.  He almost made it but finished 2nd with an incredible time and a new state record.  Trouard finshed 7th with a swift time and huge PR of 8:51.26.

Dani Jones (So., Desert Vista) finished 4th in the 800 meter run breaking the school record set by Haley Paul (now a Xavier coach) in 2004.  Jones time was 8:12.86 and ranks AZ#2 and US#15.
