Week in Review April 17 - April 24

A great week with some outstanding marks for Arizona athletes heading into the State Meet in 2 weeks.  Two more records came down this week with Devon Allen (Sr., Brophy College Prep) breaking a record he set last year in the 110 meter hurdles.   Last weekend Brophy College Prep traveled to California for the Mt. Sac relays (marks from relays and individuals listed below) where Allen, who is coming off of a football injury, ran a 13.50 in the 110 hurdles to break his 13.52 record set one year ago.   Allen's time puts him at US#3.  He also ran a 21.17 in the 200 dash to break into the top 20 nationally.

Today at the Chandler City Meet Ky Westbrook (Jr., Chandler) known for her incredible speed on the track, tossed the shot put 47-9 for a new State Record and a US#10.   The 33 year old record was 47-5 held by Cindy Johnson from Chandler High in 1980!  (Results added!)

Bernie Montoya, (Sr., Cibola) ran a great race in the mile at the Mt. Sac Relays but finished 2nd when he was clipped just before the finish by Ben Saarel (Park City, Utah).  Montoya's time was 4:09.18 (US#3) to Saarel's 4:08.55 (US#2).  Andy Trouard (SR., Salpointe Catholic) finished 3rd in 4:10.91 (US#4).   Payback is sweet as Montoya edged Saarel at the line in the 800 for a time of 1:52.40 (US#9)  to Saarel's 1:52.64.   Monica Huston (Cibola) finished 3rd in both the 800 with a time of 2:13.29 and the mile in 4:53.49.

Over at the Hohokam Invitational, Desert Vista pole vaulter, Scott Marshall (Sr.,) inched closer to the state record with a 17-1.00 jump.  After clearing 15-6 on his initial jump, Marshall cleared 16-1 in his first jump for the meet record.  He then cleared 16-6 on his next jump and 17-1 in 2 jumps for a PR and a school record.  He made 3 attempts at 17-5 and came oh so close!

On the track Sarah Fakler (Sr., Xavier College Prep) and Dani Jones (So., Desert Vista) pushed each other in the mile to new PR's with Fakler winning the race in 4:51.73 (US#16) and Jones finishing 2nd in 4:53.94 (US#25).  Huston Jones (Jr., Mesa Mt. View) finished 3rd in 5:03.81 with Shelby Brown (Jr., Xavier College Prep) next in 5:03.90.
