When did you first get involved with track and field?  How long have you been running:

My first real track experience started when I was around 9 or 10 years old. My sister started running before I did and I would always watch the practices. Then a year after that my parents finally let me start running with the Phoenix Bobcats.

What is a typical training week like for you?

Mondays are always the hardest days of the week. My coach will have me go hard on Mondays then Tuesdays and Wednesdays will normally be a combination of running and weight lifting. Thursdays will be another hard running day and Fridays are typically reserved for mechanics and block work. Saturdays and Sundays are my chance to rest my body and take care of any little problem before it has a chance to become something worse.

What are your goals for the upcoming track season?

I have a lot of goals for myself this season but mainly I just want to enjoy my last year running in high school and have fun with it. I’m looking to win district and regional’s for the third year in a row in the 400 and then there’s this one huge meet at the end of the year that’s normally a pretty big deal. Winning is always fun, so that’s at the top of my list.

How do you prepare yourself mentally for a race?  Do you have any superstitions?

Before a race I normally find myself zoning out while doing my stretches and drills. It’s not my thing to talk much while waiting for my event but sometimes I’ll start up a little conversation with someone who looks stressed out just to help them relax. Either that, or just say “It’s too hot out here for this.” Every time before I get in my blocks I tighten up my laces even if I had just tied them two minutes before. I don’t think the starters like it much but I can’t help it.

What does your season look like and will you be competing in any out of state track meets during the season or post high school season?

We have a lot of good meets on our schedule this year with nearly all of the bigger invitationals in AZ. The one I’m most looking forward to is Arcadia Invitational in California. As of right now, I’m not sure how much time I’ll have to compete over summer because of how soon I’ll be leaving for college.

What message would you tell younger runners who aspire to be at the top?

I would tell any young athlete who wants to be at the top to have a “Don’t quit mentality.” Athletics, especially running, are fun to participate in, but to make it to the top you have to dedicate yourself and put it in your head that success is what you want. I would also say find out what your limits are and constantly try to push them. You don’t want to be known as the kid to take reps off. One thing I wish I would have been told when I first started running is that you might not always do as well as you expected, but that’s okay. Find something to take from a loss and turn it into to something that’ll help you succeed next time around.

If you had to attribute your success to one thing, what would it be?

God has always played a part in my success in one way or another. I feel like one of His biggest ways of giving me success is by surrounding me with other people who support what I do and challenge me to be better.

Do you have role models or mentors in track and field?

My freshman year I looked at some of the top runners in the state as goals. I thought that they could inadvertently become ways for me to guide myself to where I should be, but I’ve found myself becoming my own runner and learning things from myself every race.

How many events do you compete in and which event is your favorite?

More often than not I compete in as many a number of events allowed in a meet. Normally it’s the 400 200 4x1 and 4x4. Without question my favorite event would be the 4x4. Since it’s always the last event of a meet, it gets so hyped up which just creates a fun environment to go out and compete in with your teammates. The 400 itself is such a technical race, so that combined with a relay makes for an interesting event.

What are 3 things we don't know about you?

  1. I've played piano for a good 10 plus years.
  2. My main sport was always basketball, but once I had an outbreak year running, I chose to skip my senior basketball season and train all year for this upcoming track season.
  3. Last year I asked a girl to prom during a track meet after she had just run 800 meters.  She was tired, but she said yes.
