AZ 2014 Cross Country Watch List - Simon Paige

 

 

With the 2014 cross country season just around the corner it's time to start our "Watch List" highlighting the top returners.  Prescott senior Simon Paige is our next Watch List athlete.

As the season starts we will continue to add athletes to the list.

5k: 16:10

When did you get started as a running:

When I lived in California, I began participating in rotary track meets and Hershey meets during football, baseball, and basketball offseasons. I actually started out as a sprinter and a jumper!

Which meets will you be running this year?

I will be running in Ray Wherley, Twilight, Sectionals, and State. Also, I may run in NXR depending on how I feel.

 

What are your goals for the upcoming track season?  What do you look forward to the most?

My main goal is to put myself in position during races so that I can perform to the best of my ability. I look forward to the excitement of the competition, as there are many excellent runners in the state.

How is your summer training going?  Your favorite workout? What kind of summer mileage do you run?

My summer training has been going much better than last summer. I’ve gotten a few weeks above 40 miles and am happy with my consistency. My favorite workout is probably my long run.

 

Do you cross train (lift, swim, bike etc)?

I do light weights in the gym.

 

Do you follow any kind of nutrition program or watch what you eat?

I try to stay away from gluten as much as possible. 

 

Have you ever been injured?

I have hardly ever been injured.

So far in your high school career, what is your favorite cross country race or cross country memory?

So far, winning the county championship last year was my favorite memory. I finally felt rested and ran 16:13 on a really hilly course at 5,300 feet altitude. That converts to 15:43 at sea level!

What is the best part of running?

For me, the excitement.

 

Out of all your running accomplishments so far, which stands out the most?

Running 4:18 for the 1600 and 1:59 for the 800 last track season made me really happy!
 

When you are not running what do you like to do?

I like to read books about US History and Francophone culture. I am an avid French student, so I really take an interest in it!
 

How have your coaches influenced you overall?

They have brought out the competitor in me and push me in practice and races.

Favorite Post-race Meal?

Beans, Rice and coconut milk.

 

Kind of shoes you train in?

Nike Pegasus 30 currently

Flat course or hills?

I have raced on hilly and flat courses alike, but I think they are both probably about equal!

I can train well in both, but I would rather race in cold weather.
