Trey Johnson picked up the hurdles just this season and has already posted some of the best marks in division 2. Arizona Milesplit Photo.

Trey Johnson was selected as the Boys Athlete of the Week for winning gold in the 100m, 100H, 4x100m and long jump at the Tolleson Invitational.

Winning is in track is defined as crossing the finish line first. However, what determines winners is often found outside of the ticks of the clock during a race. Winners don't quit. Winners don't let bad circumstances get to their head. Last week at the Chandler Rotary Tolleson's Trey Johnson was DQ'd for a false start in the 100m. That race was eating at him all week. “It was pushing me to do better," explained Trey, “I needed to get out there and prove myself again." Hungry and ready to go, Trey lined up for the 100 this week. Due a faulty gun he almost got another DQ. “I was nervous, I didn't want to do it again." Thankfully the official acknowledged the error was the guns fault and let him run the race, which he won handily.

During the race Trey works hard for fear of losing, “I think my competition can always beat me." This is probably a true statement since he enjoys racing upperclassmen. With that being said, Trey can hold his own against Jullian Clark, Alex Poe and some of the other elite division 2 runners in the state. “It's cool to know I can stick with seniors but at the same time I can't stop," explained Trey, “Hopefully I can work hard and beat their times, I want to be a great runner."

Leading up to the race Trey follows the same routine, not worrying about who he will be racing. “I do the same thing over and over. It doesn't change because of the competition." What does change is the events he is entered in. Trey is a gifted athlete. While he specializes in hurdles he has the ability to excel in the sprints and jumps as well. “My club coach says I should do the decathlon, I might try it," Trey said, though he did mention he was a little worried about some of the distance races. If anyone can pick it up, it is Trey. Shoot, he just picked up the hurdles this season!

Stay tuned to Arizona Milesplit to track how he develops.
