D4 Boys Athlete of the Year: Trey Malone

Trey Malone may have been the most dominant athlete in his respective classification at the state meet. If you calculate that statistics solely based off of points scored he was the best athlete at the state meet. Having won the long jump, 100H, 300H and 200m at the Division 4 state meet, how could one recognize Trey as the Division 4 boy’s athlete of the year?

Trey’s performances didn’t just take place at state though. His entire season was one success after another. First of all he traded the triple jump for the 200m, and won the majority of his races doing that. Additionally the only 300H race Trey didn’t win outright this season was at the Meet of Champions. He found similar success with the long jump. Even though he didn’t win the long jump at the meet of champions, he still placed 2nd against division 1, 2 and 3 competition. Racing and jumping against the larger schools helps drive trey. “I just want to show what I can do. I want to help put Yuma schools on the map.”

Even though Trey competes almost exclusively in individual events he is very thankful for his teammates. “I want to make them proud.” It would be hard not to be proud of Trey. As a freshman he ran a relatively pedestrian 52 300H, as a senior he has brought it under 40. Every year he has put long hours of training in and every year his times have come down and down. He has turned himself into someone who didn’t even make state as a freshman and in only one event as a sophomore to a 4x state champion as a senior. Next year he will stay local. Having signed with Pima Community College, Arizona fans should get a chance to see more of Trey, at least for 2 more years.

Honorable Mention:

Weston Wright: A very strong thrower, Weston had the best marks in D4 in both the discus and shot put.

Logan Pinkerton: Another very dominant D4 athlete that proved that he could mix it up with athletes from larger schools. Logan clocked quality performances in the 400, 800, and 1600 throughout the season
