George Young Invitational

Summary

The boys race started at 7:30 AM with a Jorge Martinez (Sr., Alhambra), Will Firth (Sr., Brophy), Cory Breinholt (Sr., Highland), Tommy Williams (Sr., Brophy) and Brandon Kocmoud (Sr., Sunrise) leading a small pack of runners.  Eventually Firth made his way to the front but then Breinholt found himself in the lead.  "We did the first two loops and then Cory made a move on all of us and took over the lead," said Firth after the race.  "I was focussed on Jorge and wasn't expecting another kid up there and when he (Cory) made his move, I was a little scared but we were able to catch him."

As the race continued on the lower part of the course, teammates and fans were on the upper course looking down and chanting the names of their teammates.  Family, friends and fans were at the finish line, all eyes glued to the opening from the lower course to the upper course, anxiously waiting for the first runner to emerge.

Will Firth popped up over the hill, running strong and heading for the finish line in 15:39.3.  Breinholt was 4 seconds behind in 15:43 with Kocmound 4 seconds behind Breinholt in 15:47.4.  Next was Martinez in a full sprint with Williams trying to pass him.  Martinez finished 4th in 15:50 with Williams a second behind.

Alhambra won the boys team (pictured above) title with 68 points, placing 5 runners in the top 25.  Mesa Mtn. View finished 2nd with 100 points and Brophy took 3rd with 118 points.

On the girls side, Sarah Fakler (So., Xavier College Prep) took the lead at the start with Kristi Rush (So., Highland) very close behind.  The two girls pulled away from the field with Fakler in the lead and Rush within striking distance but as the race continued and the temperatures rose, Rush started to fall behind.  Fakler came into view from the lower course running very strong winning the race in 17:47.5, but Rush had fallen back.

Brianna Decker (Jr., Mesa Mtn. View) came into view and took 2nd place in 18:48.6 with Zahira Jimenez (Sr., Nogales) in 3rd (18:54) and highland junior Tori Haberman in 4th (19:18.1).  Rush was heading for 5th place but it was clear she was struggling and collapse (due to dehydration) just short of the finish line.

Xavier College Prep won the girls team title with an incredible 27 points placing all 5 scoring runners in the top 8.  Mesa Mountain View took second with 76 points and Highland finished 3rd with 118 points.
