Year of Graduation: 2014

Track and Field PR's:

Pole Vault - 12’00”

When did you first get involved with track and field?  How long have you been running (throwing, jumping, hurdling):

I first got involved in track and field in junior high where I competed in the city meets! I did long jump, 300m hurdles, 400m, and even high jump. It wasn’t until sophomore year that I really began training for the pole vault and once I picked up a pole I never looked back!

What is a typical training week like for you?

I train Monday through Friday year round and use Sunday as an active recovery day. During the off season I train with the Arizona Pole Vault Academy with coaches Dean and Jill Starkey! During the beginning of offseason there’s a huge emphasis in the weight room so we typically lift 3-4 times a week and also incorporate speed workouts, high bar, plyometrics, etc. Once the season begins I jump 2-3 times a week while the other training days are sprinting, drills, technique, etc.

What are your goals for the upcoming track season?

My main goal for the outdoor season in 2014 is to jump 4.00m (13’1.5”). I have some other goals including placing in the top 3 at every invite, remaining consistent with heights, and getting on some big poles! I’m excited to see what the 2014 season has in store for me.

How do you prepare yourself mentally for a race?  Do you have any superstitions?

I read a lot of mental training books that have helped me become a better athlete on and off the track. It’s a constant process of learning and I think that mental strength is just as, if not more, important than the training itself. On the superstitions note….I don’t think so!

What does your season look like and will you be competing in any out of state track meets during the season or post high school season?

I had a 4 meet indoor season that included meets in Flagstaff, Reno, and Albuqurque! For outdoor I compete in Arcadia, California and also go to meets like Chandler Rotary, Toro Relays etc. Junior Olympic nationals could be in my schedule during the summer which is in Texas this year!

What message would you tell younger runners who aspire to be at the top?

I would say work hard and love what you’re doing. Practice is my favorite part of the day because I love the vault. Find something you’re passionate about and chase a dream!

If you had to attribute your success to one thing, what would it be?

I owe it all to my biggest supporters. I wouldn’t be where I am today without, first and foremost, my parents who have supported this crazy journey and my coaches who have taught me not only about the pole vault, but about myself.

Do you have role models or mentors in track and field?

I do! My coach Dean Starkey is at the top of the list. He’s an outstanding athlete and has an amazing dedication to the sport as both a coach and an athlete.  I’ve learned so much from him and I couldn’t thank him enough! I am so inspired by athletes such as Kylie Hutson, Renaud Lavillenie, and Yelena Isinbayeva as well!

How many events do you compete in and which event is your favorite?

I just compete in the pole vault. I love everything about it!

What are 3 things we don't know about you?

1. I am gluten free!

2. I love to travel.

3. I want to go skydiving!

Best thing your coach ever said to you?

There are so many great things I’ve been told by various coaches, but Dean tells me all the time to let him take care of the mental aspects of the vault and to just trust in the training and believe in myself.

Shout Outs?

Thank you, Mom and Dad, for supporting me and helping me chase my dreams! I love both of you more than you’ll ever know.
