Journal Questions:

Name:  Shannon Fritz  (Shannon's Milesplit Profile)

High School:   Desert Vista

Year of Graduation: 2016

Track and Field PR's:

Pole Vault - 11'1"

High Jump - 5'6"

When did you first get involved with track and field?  How long have you been running:

I started track in sixth grade after I did well in high jump in PE so I thought it would be fun to actually compete!

What is a typical training week like for you?

I have practice Monday through Friday, I vault on Tuesdays and Thursdays and High Jump on Wednesdays. Mondays and Fridays are usually workout days.

What are your goals for the upcoming track season?

I really want to PR in both my events and improve my form. Something really exciting for me is that if I PR in high jump this year it will match my school record and hopefully I can break it, which would be insane for me to do as a sophomore.

How do you prepare yourself mentally for a race?  Do you have any superstitions?

I don't really have any superstitions. Mentally I just need to focus but I also have to keep reminding myself to have fun. Sometimes I can get really serious to the point that it doesn't seem like I'm having any fun. I do this sport because I enjoy it! My coaches will always remind me to just smile and have fun.

What does your season look like and will you be competing in any out of state track meets during the season or post high school season?

I hope to have the same traveling season as last year, which I was very fortunate to go to as a freshman. Arcadia was definitely a meet that I had a great experience with. As far as post season I do look forward to aiming to compete at nationals which I did in Greensboro,NC last summer.

What message would you tell younger runners who aspire to be at the top?

I would tell them the same thing I always tell myself. Work hard, stay focused, but make sure you enjoy it and are having fun. No matter what, If you don't love what you are doing, you will never fully apply yourself.

If you had to attribute your success to one thing, what would it be?

Definitely my parents. They have supported me through every meet, good or bad. They are really eager to learn everything about track too since I'm the first in my family to really be serious about continuing to compete out of high school.

Do you have role models or mentors in track and field?

One of my role models would be April Steiner. I got to meet her at the pole vault summit in Reno in January and she has such a crazy fun personality. When it comes to competing she is an amazing pole vaulter and you can just tell she loves what she does.

How many events do you compete in and which event is your favorite?

I compete in Pole Vault and High Jump. People always ask me which is my favorite and I can never decide. I have a lot of fun in both and I can't imagine what it would be like not being able to do one of them.

What are 3 things we don't know about you?

  2. My favorite fruit is cantaloupe
  3. My favorite color is Tiffany blue
