When did you first get involved with track and field?  How long have you been running:

I first started running in grade school, I ran on a small club team that some of the Arcadia coaches started. I also played soccer in grade school up until freshman year when I decided I wanted to focus on running. I did not get serious about training until freshman year.

What is a typical training week like for you?

Right now this is what a week looks like, but when meets start up we change it up a bit.

Monday: Hard, typically 400m or 800m repeats

Tuesday:  Moderate, usually a long warm up run, followed by speed development, and then we finish with a long cool down.

Wednesday: Hard, some type of ladder

Thursday: Recovery, 55 minutes

Friday: Hard, typically 200m or 300m repeats

Saturday: Long, 90 minutes to 2 hours

Sunday: Recovery, 55 minutes

Also, core everyday, and strength work a few times a week.

What are your goals for the upcoming track season?

My goals for this season are to stay healthy, and race hard. I would love to be able to go through this season with out getting injured. I am looking forward to running some big PR’s.

How do you prepare yourself mentally for a race?  Do you have any superstitions?

To mentally prepare for a race, my coach and I will usually talk about the race plan two days out, so I don’t have to think about it the day before. That usually helps with nerves. The day of I try to keep my mind off of my race as much as possible. Which is pretty easy because I love watching my teammates perform in their events. As far as superstitions go, I used to wear the same pair of socks for races sophomore year, but then I didn’t wear them for a race and it went fine, so I stopped that.

What does your season look like and will you be competing in any out of state track meets during the season or post high school season?

The big invites in the state that my team will be at are chandler (Chandler Rotary), and the Distance Classic. A few of my teammates and I will be at The Arcadia Invitational in California.

What message would you tell younger runners who aspire to be at the top?

Train hard, and pay attention to the details.

If you had to attribute your success to one thing, what would it be?

My coach. He is the driving force behind me and keeps me motivated during the good times and the bad.

Do you have role models or mentors in track and field?

When I was in grade school, I used to come to the Arcadia track practices because both of my parents coach (my dad coaches distance, and my mom hurdles). And I was always star struck by how good the distance runners were. The ones that inspired me the most are Charlie Keating, Reed Blochberger, and Kevin Reyes.

How many events do you compete in and which event is your favorite?

Last season I focused on the 1600 and 3200 meter. However this year I am planning on running the 800 a few times. Out of all of these my favorite is probably the 3200 meter.

What are 3 things we don't know about you?

  1. Next to running, backpacking is my favorite activity. This summer I spent a month backpacking in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
  2. My Dad is my coach.
  3. I love advertising design and hope to have my own agency some day.
