New faces top podium at Division II boys track meet

Three-tenths of a second separated the top four runners in Saturday's 110-meter hurdle final on the final day of the Division II boys track and field championships at Mesa Community College on Saturday.

And Phoenix Thunderbird's Darren Dorsey — who qualified in the fourth spot — knew he was just one clean race away from capturing his first state title.

"I came off that last hurdle and just leaned the whole way," Dorsey said. "Then I looked at the score board, and it said lane seven and I was just so happy."

Dorsey was neck-and-neck with Gilbert Higley's D'Angelo Foster and Tolleson's Kenneth Steele off the final hurdle, and edged out the his competition in the final few steps winning with a time of 14.41 seconds. Steele was third in 14.44 seconds and Foster finished third in 14.45 seconds.

Dorsey also placed third in the 300 hurdles, two spots behind winner Anthony Phelps of Glendale Deer Valley who won the event in 38 seconds.

In the team competition, Phoenix Arcadia edged out Gilbert Campo Verde by six points to take the title with 49 points. Queen Creek was third with 42 points.

Queen Creek junior Weston Barlow captured the only gold medal of the day for his team, winning the 100 in 10.86 seconds. He defeated runner-up Ty Brandt of Tucson Salpointe Catholic by nine-tenths of a second. Kenneth Owens of Gilbert Williams Field won the 200 in 22.08 seconds, and Phoenix Washington senior Bobby Cooper won the 400 title with a time of 48.61 seconds.

In the field events, freshman Cameron Crandell of Oro Valley Canyon del Oro won the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 8 inches and clinching the title on attempts. Phoenix Central's Quinton Rusk won the long jump with a leap of 23-6.75. Casa Grande Vista Grande senior Jacob McCrory won the discus with a throw of 161-10.

Tucson Catalina Foothills wont the 3,200 relay in 7:58.95 while Tucson Sahuaro took the 1,600 relay title in 3:24.36, and Tempe Marcos de Niza took home the 400 relay title, winning in 41.79 seconds.
