AZ 2014 Cross Country Watch List - Oscar Amaya

 

Senior Oscar Amaya from Rio Rico is our next Watch List athlete.

As the season starts we will continue to add athletes to the list.

When did you get started as a runner:

I began running in middle school for the track and field team of my school, I started as a sprinter and moved up to a distance runner.

 

Which meets will you be running this year?

I am competing in Chandler, Doug Conley, twilight, Woodbridge, Rattler, state, NXR and some others.  

 

What are your goals for the upcoming track season?  What do you look forward to the most?

I have many goals this upcoming season which include helping my team achieve a state title, we have a young but hungry team and I believe in the hard work these guys are putting in every run and workout. 

 

How is your summer training going?  Your favorite workout? What kind of summer mileage do you run?

My summer training went terrific. I was able to put some high mileage in throughout the whole summer, and my favorite workout was the mountain run in the Anasazi training camp. 

 

Do you cross train (lift, swim, bike etc)?

I lift 4 times a week and in practice we do some yoga and plyometrics.

 

Do you follow any kind of nutrition program or watch what you eat?

I don’t follow a nutrition program, but I stay away from  junk food, and soda. 

 

Have you ever been injured?

I had many injuries in the past but fortunately they have never been too serious.

 

So far in your high school career, what is your favorite cross country race or cross country memory?

My favorite cross country memory by far was experiencing what it was like to be on the best team in the state back in 2012. 

 

What is the best part of running?

For me the best part of running is when all your hard work pays off, after all those miles, intervals, hill workouts, and all those little details that end up paying huge dividends on the course. For me its not just a sport, its a way of life.

 

Out of all your running accomplishments so far, which stands out the most?

Out of all my running accomplishments winning State last year was the most memorable one.

 

When you are not running what do you like to do?

 When I’m not running I like to spend time with my family and friends.

 

How have your coaches influenced you overall?

My coaches have influenced me tremendously, from middle school to the person that I'm today.
