2017 Becky Matthews Meet Preview

Tomorrow morning, Desert Vista host their Annual Becky Matthews Invite which has traditionally sought to showcase the best underclassmen in the Phoenix area. Here are a few Freshman names to keep an eye out for over the course of the meet.

Jayvon Kimbrough (Youngker) and Jasmine Singleton (Millennium) will be the likely freshman frontrunners in the High Hurdles. Jayvon opened his season on the first weekend of March running 16.17 at the Buckeye Lions Invitational, while Jasmine is coming off a 16.50 performance last week at Chandler Rotary. Meanwhile, the girls' top freshman for high hurdles, Adora Adams will be testing her speed in the unhindered 100-meter dash, against teammate Tajene McCoy who ran 12.85 at the Rattler Booster Invite.

In the distance races, Desert Vista superfrosh Brooklyn Christofis will make her season debut for mid-distance. At the Aztec Invitational earlier this month Brooklyn ran 11:14 for 3200 and in February ran 5:12 for the full-mile at the UW High School Invitational. Tomorrow she'll be doubling in the 1600 and the 800 meters. On the Boys' side, Jose Acuna (Brophy, Fr.) will double in the 1600 and 3200. Acuna ran 4:32 in the 1600 at Brophy's AMDG Invite and 10:02 for 3200 meters at Aztec. He will likely attempt to knock down the 4:30 and 10-minute barriers in those respective races tomorrow afternoon.

Desert Vista's Sevanna Hanson (So.) and Megan Griffith (Fr.) will likely dominate the Pole Vault together for the Thunder. Sevanna is one of three vaulters tied for first in the State rankings with a PB of 12 feet and Griffith holds the Girls' highest mark in the State, having already reached 10 feet twice this season.

Entered in the Girls throws, Alaina Diggs (So.) sits in third place among Arizona girl Shot-Putters after breaking the 40-feet barrier at Chandler Rotary, with a toss of 40' 3". She will be accompanied by Desert Vista's Zamaree Blevins (So.) who holds Pr's of 33' 5.25" for Shot. For the Discus throw Blevins has launched 107-6, which is not far off from Diggs' season best of 109' 11".

Best of luck to athletes and spectators alike, attending the Becky Matthews Invite tomorrow.
