Sam Negrete graduated from Mesa Mountain View High School after putting down times of 2:08 for the 800m, and 18:32 for 5km. We wish him the best as he continues his career for the ACU Firebirds.
Where are you from and when did you begin running?
I'm from Mesa, Arizona and I joined track sophomore year to challenge myself.
What was your most memorable race?
Most memorable moment was breaking 5:00 mile last year.
Did you listen to music before competing? If so what's on your playlist?
I listen to some Christian Hip Hop. Such as Andy Mineo and Trip Lee
Do you have any superstitions or rituals that you go through when preparing for meets?
My teammates and I usually have a prayer before our races.
Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?
Anyone from Red Mountain High School
What was your greatest accomplishment?
My greatest accomplishment was getting an athletic scholarship!
If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?
I wouldn't change a thing because everything happens for a reason
What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?
Getting over my injuries.
What will you miss the most about competing for your team?
I will miss the passion that my coach had.
What advice would you give to younger athletes?
I would give the advice of believing in yourself and not having self-doubt.
What is the most valuable lesson that you've learned from your coach?
The most valuable lesson I learned from Coach Ronnie would be to just believe in the process and the improvements will show.
What are your college plans? Have you decided on a major?
I got an athletic scholarship to Arizona Christian University for track and cross country and I wish to major in Political Science!
What was the deciding factor that made you choose Arizona Christian University?
I decided this college to continue my running career and grow my faith!
The Firebird's coach Brent Fahsholz was a former athlete and assistant coach for Corban University and studied psychology, humanities, and philosophy. What do like about him as a coach?
I love his passion for his athletes! He is motivational very philosophical! He'll tie his coaching with a metaphor to life. It's amazing how he does that.
Who would you like to thank for your success in high school?
I'd like to thank my teacher Thomas Hagan and my coach Ronnie Buchanan!
