AZ Salute to Seniors | Jacob Avelar

Name: School: Cibola High School
Your name: Jacob Avelar

Q: What does your training look like right now given the current situation?
A: At first, we had a group of guys going out and working hard together, but as it progressed slowly guys dropped out of fear, which is understandable. Now I just run alone and do a lot of core workouts.

Q: What are you doing to stay busy other than run right now?
A: I've been playing a lot of games lately. GTA is my go-to, but sometimes I hop on Minecraft or Rainbow Six. Trying to finish the paperwork for the Air Force Academy.

Q: What was your most memorable race/moment?
A: Twilight my sophomore year. I ran the varsity race. I was hoping to run 16:30 being new to the sport I didn't realize how hard it would actually be. I had only ever run 18:30 before so it'd be a big PR for me. I just remember getting out really fast and just holding that pace for as long as I could (the whole race). That race showed me how mentally strong I was and help fuel the rest of my running high school career.

Q: Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?
A: Myself. It wasn't until this year when I realized that it didn't truly matter what everyone else was doing. I focused more on myself this year and had a pretty big PR in Cross.

2019 Division 1 Section 3 Cross Country Boys Sectionals - Josh took 19th overall.

Q: What was your greatest accomplishment?
A: Getting 11th at State as a team after losing 3 of our top 7 runners (Thomas Cain, Jake Smith, and Nick Garren). In my Junior year, the team just came together and pushed hard for each other.

Q: If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?
A: I would've run across my freshman year. Playing football was a waste of time to me, and I would have benefitted academically and physically by being apart of the cross team.

Q: What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?
A: Junior year of track I had an IT Band injury that resurfaced in Cross season. Learning to relax and take a break was difficult, but with time the injury went away and I learned how to prevent those types of injuries.

Q: What will you miss the most?
A: The easy days where we (my teammates and I) would just laugh and talk with each other. The hard workouts where everyone was hurting, but we all pushed for each other. I think most people don't love running, they love the people involved with running.
