Firth, Fakler Win at Sole Sports Running Festival

The Cross Country season kicked off today and over at the Sole Sports Running Zone XC Festival in Scottsdal approximately 1,100 runners were in attendance.

Will Firth (Sr., Brophy) and Tommy Williams (Sr., Brophy) ran tandem from tape to tape with Firth finishing first.  The two crossed the finish line with ease and with less than a second between them, leading their team to a 1st place finish with with a combined time of 101:08.90 and an average time of 16:51.48 to 2nd place Mesa Mt. View’s  101:18.75 and 16:53.12.  Firth finished in 15:58.65 with Williams at 15:59.50.  Senior Brock Ghelfi placed 17th,  Patrick Wolf took 27th and Jake Ghelfi was 45th.

The Varsity races were divided into the Black and Gold races.  The top 4 runners from each team ran in the Gold race while runners 4 – 8 ran in the black race.  When the results were calculated by time instead of places, Brophy ended up on top but when the two races were merged together, Mesa Mt. View had 90 points to Brophy's 92 points.   Either way you look at it, it was a close race!

On the girl’s side, Xavier College Prep sophomore Sarah Fakler easily won the Gold race with a time of 17:55.30 leading the team to a first place victory (by place and by time).    When the results of both races were combined, all seven Xavier runners finished in the top 11 with sophomore McKenna Gafney finishing in 4th place (19:10.00), freshman Julianne Vice in 6th (19:23.50), senior Christian Andreen in 7th (19:27.30) and junior Breanna Perrone in 8th (19:28.65).

Second place went to Kylee Keiser who now runs for Marcos de Niza after her family moved to Tempe.  "I am really happy about my run today," said the senior who is looking forward to the 2010 season.
