This year we saw a ton of improvement in the distance races. Somewhat like the Boys' 1600m last year, this season's Boys' 800m field turned it into the distance event of the year with thirteen guys under 1:56 for the two-lap race. For this year's Leap Of The Year in the boys' distance events we had to go with Valley Vista junior Tommy Thompson.
Last year, Thompson ran a season best of 2:01 at the USATF Arizona Junior Olympic Championships. This season, he ran his first 800m in 1:55.16 at Hohokam for a new school record. Less than a month later, he gave Highland's mid-distance titans Leo Daschbach, Sam Green, and Ernest Green a run for their money at the State Meet, where Thompson ran 1:54.79 to place third.
Honorable Mention: Connor Dosmann (Arizona College Prep, Sr.) never raced the 800m at the State Championships until this year and before March, he held a 2:15 personal record. At the Chandler Rotary Invitational, Dosmann broke 2-minutes. At State, he placed 3rd in the D3 Boys 800m and then ran 1:58.15 the following week at the Arizona Meet of Champions.
Have a look at the year over year differences between 800m-runners over the last year.
