For the distances races, the biggest leap of the year came from Aliyah Balderrama of the Ironwood Eagles. Last year, Balderrama ran just under 13:55.21 for the 3200m and had some solid performances in the mid-distances. This year, she improved by over two minutes in the 3200m. At the AIA State Meet, she placed 15th in the D2 Girls' 1600m and 10th in the 3200m, both in lifetime best performances. She's now among the top-ten D2 Girl returners for the longest distance race.
This year, Ali Upshaw (St. Michael) was one of three individual athletes to secure the distance triple-crown for the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m. At Chandler Rotary, she gave Abi Archer and Hana Hall a run for their money in the Elite Girls' 3200m, and the following month she ventured to Mt. SAC where she placed 4th in the Invitational Girls' 3200m race clocking 10:37.69 as her current lifetime-best, nearly a minute ahead of where she was last year.
