Jamar Marshall - Workout with brother Jadyn

MileSplitCA caught up with state-record holder Jamar Marshall in early March just as it appeared his senior season was about to get underway. However, because of the COVID-19 shutdown, Marshall's senior season at St. Mary's High in Stockton appears will be limited to just one meet.

One race the first day of March while also leading his school's boys basketball team deep into the CIF-State playoffs is not what Marshall will be remembered for. No, what Marshall did to end his junior season in 2019 rewrote the record books.

In the 110-meter hurdles, Marshall won the CIF-State championship with the fastest all-conditions time in the 101-year history of the meet, 13.31, albeit aided by a 3.3 meters-per-second wind. He followed that up with victories at Golden West (13.89) and Brooks PR (13.60).

And then, at the USATF U20 Outdoor Championships in Florida, Marshall placed third in a field of college hurdles while hitting the line at a wind-legal 13.22 seconds, the fastest time ever by a California high schooler, the fastest time ever by a boy in the junior class (for 39-inch hurdles), and the third fastest in U.S. prep history.

This brief workout, with younger brother Jadyn -- a State Meet finalist in the 300m hurdles as a freshman -- was on the eve of a State basketball playoff quarterfinal. The hurdles coach at St. Mary's is former elite hurdler and 1984 U.S. Olympic Trials finalist John Johnson.
