  • The great pole vaulting chess match: Grant Sisserson becomes 1st to clear 17 feet in a state meet

While record times were being turned in on the track by Chandler's Ky Westbrook (the 200 meters) and Yuma Cibola's Bernie Montoya (the 800), a great chess match was happening at the pole vault. In the most competitive battle in Division I state history, five vaulters -- Brophy Prep's Cole Walsh, Glendale Deer Valley's Bo Haddock, Chandler Basha's Nathan Hiett, Phoenix Desert Vista's Scott Marshall and Phoenix Horizon's Grant Sisserson -- had all cleared 16 feet, 3 inches. First of all, Arizona never had that many vaulters clear over 16 feet in the same season. [caption id="attachment_60076" align="alignnone" width="300"] Atop the podium, from left to right: Champion Grant Sisserson, Cole Walsh, Scott Marshall, Bo Haddock, Nathan Hiett[/caption] Walsh, Sisserson and Marshall then put separation on the others, each clearing 16-6. Sisserson decided to pass on 16-9 and raise the bar to 17 feet. This might have caught the others off guard a bit. Last year, Sisserson finished third (16-0) and Walsh (16-3) second in the pole vault, which was won by Basha's Garrett Starkey at 16-6. "I skipped 16-9, because I specifically remember last year," Sisserson said. "We were a foot lower. I knew Cole was going to play that head game with me. I wanted to play it right back. And if he was going to beat me, he was going to have to make 17. He would have to make it. I wanted to get back at him. But I also just wanted 17. It was a good jump." Sisserson had never cleared 17 before -- until Saturday night. It was the first time a vaulter cleared 17 feet in an Arizona state high school championship meet. Both Marshall and Walsh came very close at clearing it. All these guys are good friends, but they all want to beat each other. After their high school practices, Walsh and Sisserson would go to former Olympic gold medalist Nick Hysong's north Phoenix home and learn from the champion in his back yard. Afterward, the bar went up to 17-5, which would have been a new record. The record is 17-4 3/4, set by Tolleson's Hysong in 1990 at the Great Southwest Classic, which was held after state. With the record holder, Hysong, watching and instructing from the side, Sisserson wasn't able to reach that height. "I was getting tired at that point," Sisserson said. "The pole was kicking my butt, but it was a good experience." Follow me here (via www.azcentral.com)
