Page High School has the advantage to float under the radar by competing in Utah, but that is not their plan. Many of the meets they are planning on attending will be down in the Valley of the Sun.

The Sand Devil team features senior Jeff Miller, who has the best chance to knock off Carlos Villarreal at the top of the podium this spring. Coach Mac Lane doesn't want him to focus on beating Carlos though. “We can only concentrate on what we think he can run. We are going to train him to what we think he can do. Hopefully it is enough to deal with Carlos," explained Coach Lane, “Carlos is a great competitor and a great kid. We certainly have our hands full."

The showdown should be interesting this spring, especially since they are going to train Jeff for times that are very close to Carlos' PRs. “We are going to train Jeff to run 4:10 and sub 9. He probably won't run those times at state though since we want him on our 4x800m team." Anyone who has attempted multiple distance races at state knows the special challenge it can pose.

The 4x800m is special to the Page boy's squad. Last year they ran 8:11, 7 seconds short of their 8:04 school record. The guys are really focused on achieving that time. Tyron Yazzie figures to join Jeff on that squad, as does senior Justin Littleman who returns from a years absence following back surgery. Coach Lane is optimistic about Justin's performance since for the first time in over a year he is healthy and running well. While he might not be up with Jeff Justin should also score some points at state in the distance events. The 4th leg, however, is a bit of a question. Coach Lane hopes they can rely on Michael Tsosie for that spot.

The distance events are not the only point of strength for the Sand Devils. Jerry Apalategui, who specializes in the 200m and 400m dashes sat out football this season to concentrate on track. He has been working hard, lifting weights and doing conditioning in order to prepare for track this season. Who knows, if he can run a good 400m, he could potentially be an answer on the 4x800m team. Another strong sprinter for Page is Jason Moore. He looks to contribute in the short sprints.

After losing Roger Sandall, Michael Cook looks to leads the throws this spring. Miguel Escalera returns as the top hurdler. While Page might have difficulty overcoming Rio Rico like they did in cross country, they certainly hope to improve on their 10th place finish from state last year. Led by a strong distance squad and focused spring crew this goal certainly appears achievable.
