On April 3, 2015 9 teams will take the field at Copper Canyon High School to participate in the 1st Annual Copper Classic Track Meet. The Schools that are set to compete is the host Copper Canyon, Campo Verde, Desert Edge, Dysart and Youngker representing Division 2. Trevor Browne and Carl Hayden representing Division 1, Estrella Foothills representing Division 3 and Arete Prep representing Division 4.

Boys Sprints: This looks to be the host schools star sprinter Jullian Coronado- Clark races to lose. He is the #1 ranked 100 meter & 200 meter sprinter in the D2. He will be running the open 400 for just the 2nd time all season. Hoping to triple at state, Jullian looks to improve on his time in the 400m from the Tolleson Invite. Also worth watching are Marcel Hardy 100 (Youngker), Quincy Booth 200 (Desert Edge) and Brandon Leon (Estrella Foothills).

Girls Sprints: In the girls Sprints it seems as the Youngker girls look to dominate the 100, 200 and 400 led by Shakia Jones, Ocean Young and Courtnee Oglesby. Tamia Robinson from the host school looks to make a challenge in the 400. Other ladies to look out for in the sprints will be Raisa Bakari (Trevor Brown), Crystal Akpede (Arete Prep) and Logan Huff & Cierra Lee (Estrella Foothills). The race of the day seems to be the Boys 400 and 800. In the Boys 400 look out for Kendrick Felix Jr. & Jullian Coronado-Clark (Copper Canyon) Clayton Self (Youngker), Joe Logan (Estrella Foothills), Justin Price (Campo Verde) and Freshman Charles Proby (Dysart). 6 tenths of a second separate the top 5 in this race. In the

Boys Distance: Luis Cervantes (Dysart: 800m), Kyle Moore (Campo Verde: 1600m) and Lucky Schreiner (Campo Verde: 3200m) lead their respective fields. The 800m should be the ost hotly contended of the three with Dominic Benson very close behind Luis. On the other side of the spectrum, Lucky should run away with the 3200m. Look for the senior to be running to make a statement, as he was out all of last fall with an injury.

Girls Hurdles: In the 100H Tamia Robinson (Copper Canyon) is the girl to beat after her 15.99 performance at Tolleson this past weekend. Other hurdlers to look out for will be Alanisse Williams (Younker), Mahogany Jimerson (Copper Canyon) Victoria Paul (Campo Verde) and Mecca Marks (Desert Edge). In the 300H Alanisse Williams of Youngker should blow away the filed. She has posted a time of 46.80 and her nearest competitor is teammate Angelica Palacio at 50.73. Anything can happen in the hurdles so these should be good races. If Alanisse falters Victoria Paul (Campo Verde) and (another) Youngker hurdler Alexis Farmer-Edwards will be waiting in the wings.

Special Relays: The Copper Classic will feature 2 Relays that you hardly see. The first is the Sprint Medley Swedish Relay which is a 100-200-300-400 in that order. They will also feature a modified distance medley that consist of 1600-800-800-1600. These should be two exciting races to watch, especially become many athletes will not be used to doing these events which should effect strategy.

Boys Shot Put: Desert Edge comes led by the Jones brothers. Hunter (52'10) and Tyson (49'5) along with their teammate Tyler Grissom 46'9 should score some big points for the Scorpions. Look for them to do more as they want to move up the state rankings. Look for Trevor G Browne's duo of Eric Munoz 50'2and Fernando Lopez 46'4 to challenge those three.

Girls Discus: Jamie Young 97'5 (Arete Prep) is the favorite in both the shot and the discus. She will face stiffer competition in the discus with Mikaela Lopez 96'4 (Campo Verde) and Zakerah Mumin 95'3 (Youngkers) all vying for gold. With only two feet seperating the top three it will come down to who is "on" come Saturday.

Boys High Jump: This will be an event to enjoy at the Copper Classic. There are 6 boys who come into the meet having already cleared 5'10. If there is a tie on meet day, which on paper is likely, it will come down to the number of misses each athlete has. The six boys are Terrell Felix, Kerry Boykins and Malik Abdul-Hakim (all from Copper Canyon), Branden Leon (Estrella Foothills), Alexander Flores (Trevor Browne) and Jonah Leyvas (Campo Verde). There are 5 others in the meet with a best attempt of 5'8. All I can say this will be very interesting.

Girls High Jump: Trameika Simmers 5'6 (Carl Hayden) stands head and shoulders above the rest of this field and this is her event to lose. Her nearest competitor has jumped 8 inches less than her. For her to lose this event will mean she no heights in the event. Aisha Thomas 4'8 (Desert Edge) and Victoria Paul 4'8 (Campo Verde) look to make the podium as well.

Boys Long Jump: Tehran Thomas 20'2 (Desert Edge) better known for his football exploits is the favorite going into the meet. What most people may not know is this young man was once a National Champion in Track & Field at the USATF Club Level. Looking challenge will be his teammate Sergio Garcia 19'11, Joe Logan 19'11 (Estrella Foothills), Tarik Madkins 19'11 (Dysart) and the Copper Canyon duo of Dominic Jones 19'3 and Malik Abdul-Hakim 19'3.

Girls Triple Jump: 400m specialist Courtnee Oglesby 36'0 (Youngker) is the lady to beat. If she scratches, look for Taylor Patoni 32'9 (Campo Verde), Taylor Godfrey 32'6 (Estrella Foothills) and Asia Young 32'5 (Trevor Browne) will be competing to try and secure the meet title.
