Weekend Highlights
Chandler City Meet
Last week was the week of City and District meets though out the state and even though the top athletes were separated by districts there were still some very impressive times and great head to head match-ups. In the Chandler district meet Quiana Jackson (Chandler) won the 400m race in a blistering time of 56.53 which moved her into the number one spot in Arizona. Her teammate Larissa Matthews won the 100 hurdles in 14.20 and the 300 hurdles in 46.52.
On the boys side, Valley Christian Pole Vaulter, Senior Daniel Fanelli cleared 15-6 for the win while Junior Bryce Lamb (Chandler) won both the Long Jump (22-4) and the Triple Jump (46-5.5)
Winslow Invitational
In the Winslow Invitational Matt Reidhead, a Junior from Snowflake, took the 100 in 10.97 while Hannah Moen, a Senior from Coconino won the women's 800 in 2:18.57 giving her the 6th fastest 800 time in Arizona this year. Reidhead also won the 400m race in 50.17 and Moen took first in the 1600m (5:16.84) and the 3200 (11:12.93). Junior, Cody Wells from Snowflake put up some impressive times winning both the 800 (1:59.81) and the 1600 (4:28.69).
In the High Jump, Junior Cory Thellmann (Joseph City) won the event in 6 - 4. Matt Boyd (Junior, Blue Ridge) also jumped 6 - 4. Thellmann is currently ranked fourth in Arizona with a 6 - 6 jump he did earlier this year at the 3A North Skydome Classic.
Arizona 4th ranked Dwight Boyd easily won the discuss by throwing it 154-5 just a few inches short of his PR of 159-2.25.
Gilbert/Higley/Queen Creek Championships
Over in Queen Creek at the Gilbert/Higley/Queen Creek Championships Courtney Golden (pictured right) from Gilbert was setting the pace in the 800 and 1600 meter races. Golden's 2:16.54 win in the 800 moved her into the #3 spot on the State Leaderboard behind Jessica Tonn (Xavier Prep) and Sarah Penney (Xavier Prep).
Sophomore Sherod Hardt (Queen Creek) separated from the pack and sprinted into the finish in a time of 4:25.92 beating th e second place runner by 4 seconds while freshman Cory Breinholt, determination etched into his face, shattered the freshman 1600 record of 4:47.93 by winning the race in a time of 4:40.55.
High Jumper Elyse Weitz from Gilbert won the High Jump by jumping 5 -2 and Jeremy Marcinko from Higley cleared the Pole Vault in 14-0, a foot higher than the second place vaulter.
Tempe City Meet
Meanwhile, over at the Tempe City Meet the Desert Vista Boys were showing why they were ranked #1 in the country in the Nike on-line competition. With the exception of the hurdles, long jump and the 4 x 800 relay.......Desert Vista Boys won every other event and in many cases, took 1st and 2nd place. Allante Battle (pictured left) won the 100, 200 and 400 meter races with Spencer Chase taking second and with Battle's 47.82 400 meter win, Desert Vista now has the top three 400 runners in the state. John Kline ran another outstanding 800 time of 1:51.95 while teammates Chris Conway and Matt Boughton took home first places in the mile (4.26.34) and the 3200 (9:44.62).
The girls 800 race proved to be one of the best of the night with three girls running under 2:20. Natashia Vulic of Mountain Pointe won the race in 2:17.71 while Yasmine Yacut (2:18.89) and Megan Dudzinski (2:19.56), both of Desert Vista, rounded out the top three.
Sophomore Shaylah Simpson (top picture) of Desert Vista cleared the Pole Vault at 12-0. Teammate Alix Weatherly was right behind at 11-6.
In the girls High Jump two freshmen were at it again. Last week in the Freshman Showcase, Desert Vista Mackenzie Neumayr won the High Jump event by beating Corona del Sol High Jumper Lauren Milovich (pictured right) but at the Tempe City Meet Milovich took the event by jumping 5-01 with Neumayr coming in second at 5-0.
Un-attached
Steve Magnuson, who is running un-attached this year because of a move from Salpointe Catholic HIgh School to Ironwood Ridge, had to travel out of state last weekend to find a competitive race. Not being able to compete in Arizona all season Magnuson went to Walnut California to run in the 1600m race at Mt. Sac. His very impressive time of 4:19.95 gives him the fastest time in the state this year!!
