The Great Southwest Highlights

Athletes from all over the West headed to the University of New Mexico over the weekend to compete in The Great Southwest Invitational. The elevation was over 5,000 feet and the winds were swirling around making it difficult to post some great times. Four Arizona athletes hit gold as they ran......jumped........and threw!

Athletes from all over the West headed to the University of New Mexico over the weekend to compete in The Great Southwest Invitational. The elevation was over 5,000 feet and the winds were swirling around making it difficult to post some great times. Four Arizona athletes hit gold as they ran......jumped........and threw!


Terra Evans was the first to strike gold running a PR of 11.39 and upseting favorite Victoria Jordan from Texas in the 100 dash elite race. The girls switched places in the 200 elite race with Jackson taking the win in 23.74 to Evans 23.91. Evans a senior from South Mountain High School and a two time State Champion in the 100 and 200, will be heading to Ohio for the USA Track and Field Junior Nationals in two weeks.

Also heading to Ohio will be juniors Will Claye (Mtn. Pointe) (pictured right, photo by Alan Versaw, Colorado Milesplit) and Bryce Lamb (Chandler) (pictured left, phot by Alan Versaw). Claye won the Triple Jump in 51-0.25 and took fifth in the Long Jump while Lamb won the Long Jump in 25-9.00 and took 7th in the Triple Jump. Claye's jump was 1 foot 4.5 inches shorter than his State Meet jump of 52-4.75.

Freshman Hannah Carson (pictured below, photo by Alan Versaw) from Dobson threw the Javalin 160-10.75, twelve feet longer than second place Ashley Aldredge from Louisiana. Carson also took 6th in the Shot Put with a distance of 41-08.75.

Other outstanding performances from Arizona Athletes:

Cara Carpenter from Mesa Mountain View and Shaylah Simpson from Desert Vista finished the Pole Vault in a three way tie for 5th place with a vault of 11-11.75 feet. Clint Robison from Salpointe Catholic took 6th place by Vaulting 14-11.00.

Chandler's Mischa Carson
took 3rd in the triple jump, jumping 38-03.25.

Larissa Matthews ran the 100 hurdles in 14.31 taking 8th overall.

Allante Battle
, a senior from Desert Vista, ran in both the 100 and 200 elite meets. Battle came in second in the 100 with a PR of 10.43 and third in the 200 with another PR of 21.19 . Giorgio Giurdanella from Mountain Ridge was just .01 behind Battle with a time of 21.20.

Serene Williams
(Peoria) also ran both of the Elite races in the 100 and 200 placing 5th in the 100 and 6th in the 200.

Queen Creeks Sharod Hardt
had a time of 4:15.21 in the 1500 to put him in 7th place.
