On Thursday evening Magnuson was one of two sophomores running in the 5,000K and place 22nd with a time of 15:37.26 in a field dominated by mostly Seniors (21) and Juniors (13). Magnuson had not run the 5k on the track prior to Nike Outdoor Nationals but his 9:16.21 time in the 3200 meters gave him the qualifying time he needed to get into the race.
The two mile race on Friday evening looked like a replay of Footlocker Nationals with 9 of the top 12 runners Footlocker Finalists. The race went out slow with no one wanting to take the lead including Jessica Tonn who found herself in the front of the pack for 5 laps. As the race moved into the sixth lap the speed picked up and Neely Spence (PA) took over, crossing the finish line in 10:20.77. Tonn finished 4 seconds behind in 5th place in 10:24.57. Her 2 mile time converts to a 10:20.95 3200, an improvement of 10 seconds on her 10:30.55 PR. Tonn went on to run the mile the next evening in a time of 4:56.43, placing 8th. Although her time was not her fastest it was remarkable all the same. On the turn at the end of the 3rd lap, Jessica was tripped up and rolled onto the infield. With the entire field already past her, she immediately jumped to her feet and sprinted to her 8th place finish showing everyone just what an incredible runner (and person) she really is.
