1A State Highlights; Klimowski 4 State Titles, 2 Meet Records

The girls 4x800 meter relay started the 1A events  at the Arizona State Meet Friday evening.  Northland Prep girls took a commanding lead from the first leg on and finished the event in 10:36.15, thirty seconds ahead of second place Joseph City,  setting a new meet record.  Junior Andrea Klimowski anchored the 4x800 for Northland Prep and later won the 3200 meter run in 11:52.19 setting another meet record.  The finals on Saturday brought two more state championship titles for Klimowski with a 5:38.66 win in the 1600 meter run and a 2:24.78 in the 800 meter run.

 

St. Augustine boys won the 4x800 meter relay in a very close finish with Joseph City.  Both teams broke the meet record of 8:40.07 with St. Augustine finishing first in 8:29.74 and Joseph City taking second in 8:30.01.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Salome sophomore Taylor Maynes (pictured left) won two state titles in the hurdle events.  Maynes won the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 16.89 and later won the 300 hurdles in 49.67.  On the boys side Dillon Goodman (Jr., Pima, pictured right) won the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.03 and set a new meet record.   Goodman also won the 300 hurdles in 41.52.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Evenly matched (in speed not height) sophomores Christy McHugh (Joy Christian, pictured left) and Cheryl Montague (So., Academy of Tucson, pictured below right) had a photo finish in the 100 meter dash with Mchugh winning the event in 12.72 and Montague finishing second in 12.74 but a short time later another close finish gave the win to Montague in 26.76 and the second place to McHugh in 26.85.  McHugh also placed second in the long jump (16-01.00) to State Champion Sarah Prokop (Fr., Tempe Prep)  who earned the title by jumping 16-04.50.

Team Championships  

 

Tempe Prep won the girls and the boys team titles.  The girls earned 115 points over Valley Lutheran  (72) and St. Augustine (69)

 

On the boys side Tempe Prep had a score of 137,  Joseph City finished second with 109 and St. Augustine took third with 60.
