South Mountain senior Brian Fair Jr. broke a nine-year-old state record on April 30 at the Perry Puma Last Chance Meet, running 1:50.12 to eclipse Bernie Montoya's (Cibola) time of 1:50.19 in the 800m.
It is a massive breakthrough for Fair Jr., who specializes in the 400m and has posted a personal best of 48.09 this season. Fair Jr. ran 1:56.60 earlier this season at the Alhambra Valley Classic on April 9, but had not competed in the event since 2018.
