MESA, AZ. -- Even after she had already won the race, Pinnacle senior McKenna Watson was still in disbelief that the Division I Girls 200m state title was hers.
That's because Watson, who was entered as the third seed, took down a loaded field that included this year's 100m winner -- Chandler freshman S'Niyah Cade -- and the 400m winner -- Highland High junior Lainey Jones, as well as last year's runner-up in the 400m -- Chandler senior Jocelyn Johnson. Oh, and there was also the defending champ in the 100m, 200m and 400m -- Mountain Pointe's Trinity Henderson.
But it was Watson who put in a late surge on the homestretch to win the race in 24.04, setting a new personal best by .55 seconds in the process. Watson out-leaned Henderson, who came in second place at 24.14.
Jones came in third at 24.38 and Cade was fourth at 24.44.
