The past weekend was a memorable one for Desert Vista junior Hayden Gorovitz, who went down to Tucson and beat an entire field of collegians at the Willie Williams Classic in the men's javelin. Gorovitz won the meet with a throw of 221-8, smashing his previous state record of 209-6 set three weeks ago.
The 17-year-old former baseball player converted javelin thrower has quickly ascended to the top of the sport in just his first full year focusing on track and field. Gorovitz actually first got started with javelin throwing when he was six years old, but went away from the sport as he tried out soccer, football and baseball over his childhood.
Baseball stuck and he was still splitting time between that and track at this time last year. But in the summer, he made the decision to put all of his attention and effort into the javelin. The decision has clearly paid off.
At the moment, Gorovitz is the ranked No. 1 in the United States for the javelin -- and by a wide margin too.
