Who to Watch in Arizona After March and Chandler Rotary

The Chandler Rotary Invitational stands as Arizona's premier regular-season meet, bringing together the state's best talent in one place. With March closing, let's take a look at those elite performances we can't ignore as the season moves closer to the AIA State Track and Field Championships.

Sprints

Rebekah-Jhade Garrett (North Canyon) | U.S. No.2 & AZ No.1 100m Hurdles

The Chandler Rotary Invitational further cemented Rebekah-Jhade Garret as one of the top athletes in Arizona after running 13.52 seconds against a -2.7 headwind to win the 100m hurdles by just one-hundredth of a second. She might be on her way to securing her third straight Arizona State Championship, but it won't come without a challenge.

Imani Galera-Young (Chandler High School) | AZ No.1 & U.S. No.13 300m Hurdles

A hard-fought 100m hurdles, 4x100m relay, and 300m hurdles triple proved Imani Galera-Young can do it all for Chandler High School this year. Among winning the 4x1 and 300m hurdles, she also pushed Garret to her closest race in the 100m hurdles.

Ava Davis (Millennium) | AZ No.1 100m & 200m

March 2026 may mark the beginning of Ava Davis's reign as Arizona's top sprinter for the next three years after the sophomore secured the state's top mark in the 100m & 200m. Davis set these state-leading marks at the Chandler Rotary Invitational, where she swept victories in both events.

Mark Smith (Williams Field High School | U.S. No.1 100m & U.S. No.3 200m

A 100m win at the Chandler Rotary Invitational and a 10.52 state lead at the Devon Allen Invitational illustrate that Trey Smith is destined for a great season.

Aulani Gleason (Mesquite High School) | AZ No.2 400m & U.S. No.4 Frosh

Don't forget the name Aulani Gleason, who won the Chandler Rotary Invite 400m as only a freshman. She is currently ranked among the fastest freshmen in the nation and looks to be a problem going forward.

Jett Merrill (Ironwood High School) | AZ No.1 110m Hurdles & U.S. No.20

After a 14-flat performance in the 110m hurdles to start March, Jett Merrill will be aiming to break 14 seconds and win his first Arizona State Championship.

Field

Ryder Hall (Snowflake) | AZ No.1 & U.S. No.3 Long Jump

Ryder Hall jumped two feet farther to win his second consecutive Chandler Rotary long jump title, setting a personal record of 23-11 last weekend. He's currently ranked as the third-best jumper in the nation.

Kadyn Hysong (Shadow Mountain) | AZ No.1 & U.S. 3 Pole Vault

At the Chandler Rotary Invitational, Kadyn Hsong cleared the impressive 17-foot benchmark to secure his victory.  He ended his series at 17-1, ranking him third in the U.S. overall and first among sophomores.

Distance

Taylor Drewry (Basha High School) | AZ No.1 & No.2 3200m

After a successful Chandler Rotary Invitational, Taylor Drewry currently leads the state in the 1600m and 3200m. This is Drewery's redemption season after a stress fracture prevented her from competing at her full potential at last year's state championship.

Symond Martin (Page High School) | AZ No.1 3200m

Becoming the back-to-back winner at the Chandler Rotary Invitational meant everything to Symond Martin as he walked away with a 9:06 state lead. Martin hopes to enter faster races this April to bring his time down into 3200m and 1600m.

Maddox Bonilla (Casteel High School) | AZ No.1 800m & U.S. No.23

At this point, Arizona knows how to develop a nationally ranked boy in the 800m after Maddox Bonilla ran 1:52.38 to win the Chandler Rotary Invitational. This is Bonillia's second time running 1:52 this season, which may bode well for a breakthrough coming soon.

Nicole Ripperdan (Queencreek) | AZ No.1 400m & U.S. No.1 800m

Arizona's leader in the 400m and 800m, Nicole Ripperdan, experienced a bittersweet ending at her last Chandler Rotary. Although she secured her second consecutive win in the 800m, Ripperdan was 64-hundredths of a second from breaking the 2:10 barrier.

Zarian Rodriguez (Hamilton) | AZ No.1 1600m

The last 400m of the Chandler Rotary 1600m showed that Zarian Rodriguez will be a favorite to win this year's state championship after closing in under 60 seconds to run 4:12.21.
