On the team side, Highland High, would own the day with a sweep in the girls and boys races.
Garcia Gamez Leads Fast Boys Race
John Garcia Gamez made a statement at the front of the boys Championship race.
The Mica Mountain junior raced to a lifetime best and victory in blazing 15:30.09, holding off Basha senior Brady Summers, who crossed the line five seconds later in an impressive personal best of 15:34.94.
Asa Jones of Gilbert Christian rounded out the top three boys, clocking 15:46.21 to give the race three athletes under the 16:00 barrier.
Behind the individual battle, Highland used its depth to capture the boys team title with 60 points, led by junior Brandon Delancey in a strong 15:57.69
With Garcia Gamez and Summers separated by less than five seconds and three athletes already running faster than 15:50, the Western Equinox provided another glimpse at several names that could be contenders as the Arizona season continues.
Long Takes Girls Championship
On the ladies side, Cassidy Long showcased an impressive run of her own.
The Mesa Mountain View sophomore raced to the Championship victory in a new personal best of 18:01.46, holding off ALA Queen Creek senior Tally Call, who finished just on her heels also in a new PR of 18:10.51.
Highland junior Natalia Morris rounded out the girls top three, crossing the line in 18:53.36.
Morris' performance also lifted her team to the girls title with 51 points, completing a Championship team sweep for the Hawks at Freestone Park.
For Long, the win adds another name to keep an eye on at the front of Arizona's girls cross country scene this fall.
Highland Sweeps At Freestone Park
The Hawks captured both Championship team titles, scoring 60 points in the boys race and 51 points in the girls race.
With fast individual performances at the front of the pack and a the team victory for Highland, the Western Equinox XC Invite provided plenty of early-season excitement in Gilbert.
As Arizona moves further into September, the picture at the front is starting to take shape.
