WELCOME TO THE 2023 MESA CITY



CHAMPIONSHIPS.THIS YEARS MEET WILL BE



HELD ON APRIL 19, 2023. EVENTS



WILL BE HELD ON THE CAMPUS OF WESTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL.

FORMAT:

There will be TWO meets run simultaneously: Rising Stars and Elite. Freshmen and Sophomore athletes may compete in the Rising Stars or Elite meet but their results will count for the level in which they compete. Juniors and Seniors athletes may only compete at the Elite level. Athletes may compete in one level in one event and another level in a different event. However, they score in the level in which they compete. Scores of the two meets will be combined to determine a champion. All levels will have electronic timing so they will be eligible to qualify for state. All events will be run as finals.

NUMBER OF ENTRIES PER SCHOOL

Each school will be allowed four (4) entrees in elite level and two (2) for rising stars. Each school will be allowed one (1) entry in each of the relays per level. Official lane assignments and positions will be handed out at the coaches' meeting on Friday.

ENTRY DEADLINE

All entries will be completed by the coach using Mile split. Deadline will be Sunday, April 16, 2023, by 11:59 PM. There will be no changes allowed to your entries after this date. If a substitution needs to be made at the meet, simply allow the athlete to compete in the spot of another. If the result is a top 3 finish and/or a state qualifying mark, we will make the change of name.

ENTRY FEE

There is no team entry fee. To replace an entry fee, we are asking each school to run an event. Westwood will be running the Discus.

AWARDS

Awards will be awarded to the top three finishers (including relays) at both levels. There will be a championship and runner-up trophy for the Elite and Rising Stars meet.

ADMISSION CHARGE

Adult admission to each session will be $5.00, while students and seniors will be to $3.00. All current and past military are free with military ID. 

FIRST AID

A trainer will be on site. The site for the training table will be located in the infield just adjacent to the discus ring. The trainers are there for critical care-injuries. Please tape your own athletes.

QUALIFYING MEET

The City of Mesa Championships will be a certified meet for the State Meet.

REPORT CALL AND STAGING AREA (Bull Pen)

Contestants will report to the Staging Area when the announcer gives the report call. The call will be given at least 15 minutes before each event. At this time contestants will be given their hip lane numbers and instructions given by the Clerk of the Course. If a contestant fails to report at or by the last call they will be disqualified from that race .It is the coaches' responsibility for having their athletes in the staging area at the proper times. The staging area (Bull Pen) west end of track straight-a-way.

TEAM AREAS

All team members, coaches and managers will stay in the stands or warm up areas. Officials only will be allowed on the field. Hurdles will be provided for warm ups. Each coach will be responsible for keeping his team members in the North bleacher areas. Athletes may warm up on the athletic fields located to the west and behind the South stadium bleachers. No team tents shall be set up in the South bleachers. Please advise athletes that after they are done competing they need to exit the infield.

WARM-UP AREA

Athletes can warm up at the West practice field or behind the South stadium bleachers.

STARTING BLOCKS

Starting blocks will be furnished Westwood High School. 

COACHES MEETING

There will be a Coaches meeting at 1:00 PM in the Sports Annex near the start of the 100m and the sports medicine room. We will have a Coaches hospitality room and prepackaged food.

TEAM UNIFORM RULE:

Reminder to check NFHS rule books in regards to team uniform rules.

PACKET PICK UP

Packets will be picked up at the coaches meeting. Packets will include lane assignments and Pole Vault Certification sheet.

ENTRY FORMAT:

Log onto mile split and follow all instructions. Remember your password. You need to create your team roster first, before entering into events. Please enter athletes by Sunday 11:59PM, April 16th, 2023 on the mile split website.

FIELD EVENTS: Begin at 1:30PM

All field event competitors will need to check out with event judges prior to reporting for a running event. Athletes competing in a relay may report to the track. Keep in mind that it is the team's responsibility for following all NFHS rules such as matching uniforms etc .All pole-vaulters must have weight certification on file with the Pole Vault Judge before competition. Weight declaration cards will be in the coaches' packet.

SHOT PUT AND DISCUS

Shot Put and Discus rings are concrete. Please use your own throwing implements and there will be weighing



implements before the competitions begin. 
All marks will be measured this year. There will be no minimum mark.

3 throws for rising stars both shot and discus/ boys and girls- no finals

3 throws for elite both shot and discus/ boys and girls- top 8 make finals 3 throws in finals

Discus will begin with Elite Boys followed by Rising Stars Boys and then Elite Girls followed by Rising Star Girls

The Shot Put will have one shot put ring the center west ring will start with the Elite Girls followed Rising Star Girls, then Elite Boys followed by Rising Star boys

LONG JUMP AND TRIPLE JUMP

The runways for long jump and triple jump area are of all-weather surface therefore will require soft-soled shoes or track shoes with 1/4-inch spike or less. All marks will be measured this year.

Long Jump will be Located on the East end of Track and East Runway

POLE VAULT & HIGH JUMP:

The runways for pole vault and high jump area are of all-weather surface therefore will require soft-soled shoes or track shoes with 1/4-inch spike or less.

The five-alive method will be used.

Opening Heights for Pole Vault:

Rising Stars - Men 7' 1", Women 6' 1"

Elite - Men 10' 1", Women 7' 1"

Pole Vault at all levels will increase 6 inches per bar raise. When five or fewer athletes remain, heights may be adjusted according to NFHS rules.

Rising Stars Girls, followed by Rising Stars Boys. Then Elite Girls and then finishing with Elite Boys.

HIGH JUMP

High Jump for all levels will increase 2-inches per bar raises. When five or fewer remain, heights may be adjusted according to NFHS rules. High Jump will be located on the West end of the Track. The Three-alive method will be used

High Jump1:00 - 1:30 Run-Throughs Starting Height: 4' 9"

After the bar reaches 5'11" the bar will be raised 1-inche per bar raise.

4:00 Rising Star/ Elite Girls



High Jump 3:30 - 4:00



Run-Throughs Starting Height: 3'11"

After the bar reaches 4'11" the bar will be raised 1-inche per bar raise.

JAVELIN:

The javelin will be thrown from grass in the south soft ball field.



The runway for this is grass for this year.

All marks will be measured this year. There will be no minimum mark. In the Rising Stars and Elite meets athletes will be given three non-consecutive attempts. The top 9 throwers in Elite will make the



Finals and have three non-consecutive attempts.

Javelins will be weighed before competition. The host school will not provide javelins. Any javelin that has been approved may be used by any athlete in competition.

1:00 PM warm ups will begin

1:30 PM Javelin will begin with Rising Star Boys and then Girls and then followed with Elite Boys and Elite Girls

Please do not enter athletes who have not thrown the javelin up to this point at the season.
