Arizona Runners Have Great Showing At Woodbridge

The Woodbridge Invitational is a great way to beat the heat and run on a flat and fast course.  It's a favorite meet for the Desert Vista boys and girls cross country teams and this year a few more teams joined them.

Rio Rico competed Friday night in the Red Varsity A races with Alexandra Schadler, Carlos Villarreal and Oscar Amaya having the fastest times of the day.  Villlarreal and Amaya finished 1 -2 in the boys Varsity race with Villareal having a time of 14:31 and Amaya with a 14:42 over the 3 mile course.  Amaya's time held until the final race on Saturday night - the Boys Sweepstakes Race - where he would have placed 10th.

After race interview with Carlos Villarreal and Oscar Amaya.  Both boys talk about their training, their goal to run 14:30 in the race and Oscar's first airplane ride to California.

In the girls Red Varsity sophomore Race Allie Schadler ran a blistering 17:09 to finish 5 seconds ahead of Laguna Hills senior Brianna Bartello.  Allie's time is a huge PR for her and would have placed her 21st in the girls Sweepstake Race.

Allie's talks about her goals for herself and for her team.

In the Girls Sweepstakes race Dani Jones (Sr., Desert Vista) led her team to a 2nd place finish in their season opener.  The race had a fast start with Destiny Collins from Great Oaks running a 5:04 1st mile but Jones had no intention of trying to keep up.

"I like the idea of getting faster as you go, "said Jones after the race.  "The first mile needs to be smart - use your head the first mile - use your strength the second mile and use your heart the last mile.

Jones had a strong 2nd place finish with a time of 16:16.  Her teammate and sister Baylee (So) was 2nd for the team with an 11th place finish in 16:58 followed by Mandy Davis (So) in 30th place with a 17:23.  Madi Bucci (So) finished 47th with a time of 17:36 followed by Mason Swenson (Jr) in 48th with a 17:37.
