As a sprinter, Jasmine Stauffacher-Gray (Sr., North Canyon) already has three Arizona State Titles in the 400 meter dash and a PR of 54.05 but at the end of her sophomore year she tried the 300 meter hurdles at the Meet of Champions. Her time of 43.36 won the event and was just 1.35 seconds off the state record.
At her opening season meet her junior year (2014, Rattler Booster Invite) Jasmine was on a record breaking run when her foot caught the final hurdle and stumbled toward the finish line. Her prelim time of 42.27 was more than a second faster than her PR and gave her the junior class record.
For the rest of the season Jasmine won every race in Arizona and finished 3rd in the Invitational Race at Arcadia. The State Record in the 300 hurdles was within reach but the event fell immediately after the 400 meter dash.
At the Arizona State Meet last May, Jasmine won the 400 dash in 54.12 winning the State Title for the third time and the junior class record. There was no time to pick up her medal or a photo op on the awards stand because the 300 hurdles were next so Jasmine jogged the 100 meters from the finish line of the 400 dash to the start line of the 300 hurdles.
With the final hurdle in sight Jasmine had a substantial lead but caught her foot on the final hurdle and fell, however, the fall did not stop her momentum as she rolled on the ground and bounced back up to her feet to a photo finish.
Jasmine won the race with a time of 43.811 over 2nd place Sydney Madrid (Sr., Marana) in 43.819.
Two State Titles with barely any time for recovery and the where-with-all to keep going - makes this moment a 2014 memory!
