When did you first get involved with track and field?  How long have you been running:

I first started running when I was 10 years old on the Arizona Blaze club team. I started hurdling just last year actually (2013) and jumping this year!

What is a typical training week like for you?

It all depends on where we are in the season but usually Mondays are the hardest, Tuesdays are strength days, Wednesdays we have meets, Thursdays are hard running days, and then Fridays differ based on if we have an invitational the next day.

What are your goals for the upcoming track season?

This season I really want to try out for the World Junior Championship team since I wasn’t old enough last year. I’m also focusing a lot on maturing mentally as an athlete and taking more of a leadership role on my team, and of course working on relaxing my nerves and just feeling confident when I walk on to the track.

How do you prepare yourself mentally for a race?  Do you have any superstitions?

Prior to a race I always pray before I run, and I also like to just kind of get away from everyone so you’ll often see me wandering around the infield.

What does your season look like and will you be competing in any out of state track meets during the season or post high school season?

I am very very excited for this season!! I think it will be my best season yet and I can’t wait to see not only how I perform but my team as well, since we’ve been working so hard! In high-school season, our team is headed to Arcadia, and after the season I’ll be competing in The Great Southwest for sure and others are to be determined.

What message would you tell younger runners who aspire to be at the top?

Always focus on your faith, God gives you this talent and so everything you do with it is to glorify him. Stay humble, once you start taking this all for granted your work ethic changes, remember that there is always someone training to beat you. And lastly, never be satisfied, always strive to do better than you did before!

If you had to attribute your success to one thing, what would it be?

My faith in God.

Do you have role models or mentors in track and field?

I really look up to Allyson Felix and Lolo Jones, they’re both incredible athletes with great stories to follow! I also respect a lot of athletes in Arizona like, Ky Westbrook, Robert Grant, Devon Allen and Jasmine Todd, they’ve all had and are continuing to have amazing careers.

How many events do you compete in and which event is your favorite?

I compete in 4 different events, not including the relays: 400, 200, 300H, and Long Jump. My favorite for the longest time has always been the 400, but I’m slowly starting to like the hurdles more and more.

What are 3 things we don't know about you?

1. I still have baby teeth
2. I LOVE goldfish (the snack food, not actual goldfish)
3. I asked to be on my school football team and was denied

Best thing your coach ever said to you?

“You’re good, you don’t have to keep worrying so much, you can compete with these people” -Coach AJ
