Over the last 3 weeks of the state qualifying season teams pull out all the stops and athletes define their standing in the overall top 24. At the Mario Castro Invitational on Friday, twenty-nine teams from Southern Arizona got together a put up marks that cannot be ignored.


The most outstanding race of the day went to the well-known and often mentioned Carlos Villarreal of Rio Rico. On his soon-to-be home track at Drachman Stadium, Carlos lifted and pumped his way to a national US #1 time of 4:09.06. It is not out of the question to watch if Carlos makes a bid for the Arizona state 1600m record come May 8th. His other race of the day shows his commitment to bettering his team by anchoring the 4x400m relay to a meet win and a Division 3 #2 time of 3:29.23.
