Were you looking at other college? What made you decide on the Colorado School of Mines?
When it came down to making the final decision I was mainly choosing between California Polytechnic University- San Luis Obispo, Northern Arizona University, and Colorado School of Mines (I wasn't planning on running at CalPoly or NAU competitively). To me, academics were a huge part of the decision, but when I looked at all three schools, they all offered me with a high level of academic rigor, so that made my choice even harder. However, after meeting the coaching staff at Mines I felt like I would really be able to thrive as a runner under their coaching, and the girls on the teams were so nice and inclusive that I could see myself living there for the next 4 years of my life. Also, I knew that I had an immense passion for running and I couldn't imagine my life without it, so Mines was the obvious choice.
What field of study do you want to go into?
Mechanical engineering, for sure. Since I was little I've always had a fascination with creating little machines and mechanism out of Legos and have enjoyed taking math and physics classes throughout my education. Not to mention, my dad is a mechanical/systems engineer and my mom is a math teacher so I think engineering is in my blood.
There is nothing flat about Golden, how do you like running on hills?
Though it may be deceiving, Catalina Foothills High School is actually surrounded by hills and I don't think we have a single run that doesn't have some sort of incline. That being said, I'd say I've gotten pretty used to them over the years and actually enjoy hill workouts, even though some of my teammates think I'm crazy to say that. I'm really excited to go run in Golden because it is a beautiful area and I can't wait to have my new teammates take me on runs that show me just that, even though the elevation change will definitely be an adjustment.
What has been your favorite HS memory?
That's a really hard question because I have made so many memories with the girls on my team, who are definitely my second family, over the past four years. However, I think breaking our school 4x800m relay while winning the event at state last year has to be my favorite because I absolutely loved the girls that I ran with in the relay and we had worked so hard throughout the entire season to be able to do what we did. Winning the overall state track and field title and the XC state title are definitely up there too.
Having won team state championships in both, do you like track or XC more?
I don't think I could choose one over the other. To me, both give you the feeling of family with the team that you run with while also allowing you to push yourself individually to get better every day and drop your times lower and lower. The past 4 years at CFHS have really made me love both sports even more and I can't wait to be part of a new family up at Mines with my future teammates.
