Eastmark sophomore Bryson Nielsen in the elite 1600m at the Nike Chandler Rotary Invitational at Chandler High School this past weekend. The sophomore recorded three new personal bests in the 800m, 1600m and 3200m over the two-day meet.

CHANDLER, AZ -- Each time he looked at the finish board with the results from the race, Eastmark sophomore Bryson Nielsen was in absolute disbelief. It was as if the numbers didn't make sense to Nielsen. 

That's probably because heading into the elite 1600m at the Nike Chandler Rotary Invitational this past weekend, Nielsen was seeded at the bottom and entered the race with one simple goal: just finish.

Not only did he finish, but he did so in fourth place while running a huge new personal best of 4:15.14. Nielsen became the new state leader in the process, finishing as the highest-placing Arizona athlete in the race that featured competitors from Colorado, Idaho, Nevada and Texas.
