4 State Records Fall at the Arizona 5A-I State Championships

State records are tough to break and from 1999 until 2005 not a single record was broken in boy's Track and Field until 2006 when Cylend Simmons from Westwood broke the 300H record by the slimmest of margins (.01). Last season the Desert Vista boys broke the state record in the 4 x 800 by two seconds. You would think a record that took 8 years to break would stand for awhile but last night the Desert Vista boys 4 x 800 team (3 juniors and a senior) broke their own state record by 2 1/2 seconds. The race started off with junior Nick Rice (pictured 2nd from left) who ran a sub 1:59 followed by junior Daryl Banks (pictured far left) who also ran a sub 1:59. Adam Estavillo (pictured far right) took the baton for the third leg running a 1:56.7 and John Kline (pictured 2nd from right) lit up the track with a 1:51.3 final leg. The final time of 7:45.40 beat Desert Vista's best time of 7:47.99.

The crowd was still feeling the excitement of the 4 x 800 when the Chandler boys 4 x 100 team stepped to the line. Steven Jackson took the first leg of the race handing off to Markus Wheaton. Wheaton passed the baton to Marc Anthony who handed off to anchor Bryce Lamb. When all was done the Chandler team had a new state record of 41.09 beating the time of 41.33 previously set in 1992 by Maryvale High School.

Meanwhile over at the triple jump pit Will Claye from Mountain Pointe was putting up an impressive mark of 52-4.75. His jump passed Bryce Lamb's 6 week record of 52-4 set in March at the Chandler Rotary Invitational. Lamb, a junior, had broken a long time record (49-1) set in 1994 by Aaron Fox of Sinagua.

The Final record broken of the evening came on the final event. Desert Vista boys 4 x 100 relay team finished the night the same way they started and with two of the same runners, John Kline and Daryl Banks. The two were joined by Spencer Chase who had taken 2nd (47.45) in the 400m race and Allante Battle who had taken 1st (47.12) (Kline came in third (47.54) in the same race). The four raced to a state record of 3:13.50 beating Westwood High Schools record of 3:14.33 set in 1999. By the end of the evening John Kline walked away from his high school career holding three Arizona All Time State Records. The two relay records he was part of at the State Meet and an individual 800m record he broke at the Arcadia Meet in Arcadia California last month.

Both of Desert Vista's relay teams are ranked #2 nationally and Chandlers 4 x 100 team puts them in 8th. Will Claye's triple jump lands him in the US#2 spot.
