Sun Angel Classic Finals Meet Recap

The Sun Angel Classic Finals for the High School races were held on Saturday afternoon with top tier performances from Arizona athletes along with the opportunity to see Premier races from some of the best in the World.

Upon returning to the Sun Angel Classic Jae'Nisa Heckstall (Raymond S. Kellis) set out to conquer the 100 Hurdles just as she had done on Thursday with a Meet Record performance, this time of 14.10. Later in the Girls 100 meter final she ran 11.95 as the 3rd girl this season under 12 seconds.

In the Boys 4x800 Relay, Desert Vista overtook Tolleson Union through the course of the 3rd leg and then relentlessly stretched the lead through the anchor to seal the victory in 8:16 over 5 seconds ahead of Tolleson. On the Girls side, the Chaparral Firebirds pressed the lead from the beginning and delivered the baton through the finish in a time of 9:53.

Highland's Alena Ellsworth returned for the Final of the Girls 400, to shatter her lifetime best from Thursday with a run of 54.68 seconds, for a new school record! On the Boys' side Robert Williams (South Mountain) won the 400 Final by a hair over Umajesty Williams (Chaparral) in 48.694 to 48.699.

Then came the 800, and where the next fastest returning Boys time from the prelims was 1:59 from Kyle Kerr (Shadow Ridge). Kyle would edge out Joaquin Armitage (Ironwood) and David Nelsen (Hamilton) all three running under 1:57.

For the Boys 200 meter Final, Desert Vista's Ryan Bender shot round the bend to claim victory and lead Umajesty Williams, Robert Williams, and fellow teammate Talib Mudiwa under 22 seconds, all ranked top 10 in the State. South Mountain's superfrosh Autumn Boyd won the Girls 200 Final in just over 25 seconds.

In the Boys 1600, the peloton pressed the pace early with Tristan Stellmach (Queen Creek) and Devin Bowen (Highland) at the helm. Over the next few laps Tristan and Devin strung the pack out and continued trading the lead around the final lap, until Stellmach bore down the final 200 to claim victory in 4:25.15 to 4:25.86.

Finally, in the 4x400 Finals the Desert Vista Thunder boys powered through to claim victory over the Westwood Warriors and the Highland Hawks. To close out the High School races, the Liberty Lady Lions dominated the Girls 1600-meter Relay in a time of 3:55, 7 seconds ahead of the competition.
