AIA T&F D2 State Champs-Day 3 Recap

Super Frosh Jadyn Mays from North Canyon dominated the girls sprints in the 100m (11.88) and 200m (24.54). Mays barely outkicked Jae'Nisa Heckstall from Raymond S. Kellis High School who finished with a time of 24.61 to place second. In the 400m Cactus Shadow's Alexa Hokanson ran an impressive 56.29 in gusty winds and this was her second victory after her 800 meter win on Wednesday. North Canyon's Tyrees Moulton placed 1st in the 200m (22.06) and 400m (47.49). In the finals for the 100 meter dash Queen Creek's Kevon Jackson ran a 11.15 and outkicked Moulton.


Jae'Nisa Heckstall form Kellis stole the show in the girls 100 hurdles with a winning time of 14.85 edging out Brielle Sterns who placed second (14.86). Heckstall also won the 300m hurdles running 43.79 seconds. In the boys hurdles Marcus Naisant form Marcos de Niza won the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.13. Shamar Moreland from Betty H. Fairfax placed first in the 300m hurdles (40.35).


Chaparral's Abi Archer and teammate Rachel Turner went 1-2 in the 3200m. Archer ran a time of 11:05.21 while Turner (11:25.57) who was in 4th place at lap 8 sprinted to the finish with 300 meters to go and out kicked her opponents to place second . On the boys side Manuel Olivo-Quinones (Buena) won the 1600m with a time of 4:22.28. In the 800m Shadow Ridge's Kyle Kerr (1:59.22) edged out Joaquin Armatage (1:59.25) from Ironwood.

Marana's Mele Hala'ufia cleared 37-04.25 in the triple jump to win her first state title. Shamar Moreland from Fairfax claimed his second state title (placed first in 300 hurdles) in the long jump clearing 23-09.00. In the high jump Canyon del Oro's Cameron Crandall jumped 7-00.00 to claim first place.


In the throwing events Alexis Jones from Queen Creek threw 40-05.75 to win the Shot Put. Sophomore Kiara Anderson from Dysart placed second with a throw of 39-09.50. Tyson Jones from Desert Edge threw 76-06.5 to win the Shot Put.

A highlight event went to the North Canyon Girls 4x800m (9:43.25). By the time Dominique Mustin received the baton they were secured for the win. Mustin looked strong with 30 meters to go and started to collapse at the finish and barely crossed the line. Mustin stated, " I couldn't feel my legs but knew I had to finish for my team."Later that evening Mustin joined Jadyn Mays in the 4x400m (3:23.12) to help her team finish first in that relay as well. South Mountain girls took home first place medals in the 4x100m relay (48.19). In the boys 4x100m Queen Creek took home first place medals and ran a time of 42.07 seconds. In the boys 4x400m North Canyon was in 4th place, however that all changed after Moulton turned it on the 200 meters and out kicked Apollo.

Like the Chandler Wolves, North Canyon to home the boys and girls state championship trophy for Division ll. The North Canyon girls (75) won by 1 point over Cactus Shadows (74) with athletes such as Jadyn Mays, Makyah Richard, and Dominique Mustin. All three girls will be returning next season. North Canyon boys defeated Canyon del Oro by 10.5 points scoring 53.5 overall.
