Salpointe Catholic Girls

The Lady Lancers return as D3 State Champions with 4 from last year's squad at the State tournament. They're led by Ana Alvarez-Tostado (Sr.) and Zoey Delgado (So.) who placed 3rd and 4th respectively, in the D3 race at the cross-country State Meet last November. Ana is a Senior with two runner-up titles on the track from this year's Division III tournament (1600 & 3200) and has stepped up to set the example for the underclassmen. Zoey Delgado has also risen to the challenge having run 18:31.00 for 5k and 11:33.86 for 3200. Going off returner 5k times, the Lady Lancers are together ranked 1st in Division III.

Coach Urbanski Says...

Who are your top returners?

We return 4 of our top 7 from last year: Senior Ana Alvarez-Tostado (3rd at state), sophomore Zoey Delgado (4th at state), sophomore Tayler Thomas and junior Katie Kelly.

Do you have any impact freshman or incoming transfers?

It's pretty early to say but during preseason, incoming freshmen Lexi Dicochea and Lexi Lambert could both challenge for varsity spots.

What meets are you keying in on this year?

Each one of our invitationals are important as they all build toward the state championship meet. We travel to the Peaks in the Flagstaff, Desert Solstice in Marana, and Mt Carmel in San Diego early in September to give us some early season tests. By Desert Twilight and Rattler, we have a pretty good idea of where we stand.

How has your preseason training been going?

Between the boys' and girls' teams we have over 40 athletes training throughout the summer, which is a good number for us. The athletes realize how quickly we begin competition, once we start officially in August and how short the season is, so they take summer training pretty seriously as they build their base mileage.

Have you set any goals as a team?

We always just emphasize the process-- training and behaving like champions, putting team first, building mental toughness. If we meet those goals, we believe we will be competitive.
