Freshman Girls to Watch as Sophomores in 2021

There were six freshman girls this season who went under the 19-minute 5K barrier, which is a pretty good barrier to cross for these young women. While freshman girls more than freshman boys can make a greater impact on their teams, the future no doubt looks bright for distance running in Arizona with a good number of girls running under 20-minutes for a 5K in 2020.

Casteel had three freshman girls running 20-minutes or faster (Kyah Zurke, Natalia Medina, and Hanna Droeg) this past season. Skyline had two girls running 20-minutes or faster as well this season (Abby Oberfield and Mayte Manuel). Perry also had two freshman girls in the 20-minute-range or faster (Sarah Jones and Rylee Hatcher). And the Flagstaff girls from up north continue to nurture faster young women as well with two of their freshman running in the 20-minute-range or faster as well (Alyssa Harris and Mairead Kelly).
