The Thatcher Eagles will have several key players in most events, but there are a few key athletes who could challenge the Eagles at the State Meet.
Last year, Evan Favorite (Sedona Red Rock, Sr.) and Riley Morris (Thatcher, Sr.), placed 2nd and 3rd in the D4 Boys Long Jump competition at the AIA Track and Field State Championships.
Kyran Lee (St. Johns, Jr.) is ranked as the top returning triple jumper among the Division 4 Boys, but he didn't compete at the State Championships, while Seamus McCarthy (Arizona College Prep, Sr.), Evan Lovett (Pusch Ridge Christian, So.) and Daniel Jimenez (St. Johns, Sr.) were the top returning scorers at State, last year. Then Kyle O'Donnal (Jr.) and Brock Jones (Sr.) from Thatcher are in position to possibly score some critical points.
Then for the High Jump, Austin Oppen (St. Johns, Jr.) is the returning D4 Boys State Champion, and holds a lifetime best of 6-4 from the 2017 AIA Track and Field State Championships. Oppen's St. Johns teammate Preston Wilson placed 3rd in the D4 Boys High Jump competition last year as a sophomore. Thatcher look like the favorites to win the D4 Boys State Title, but could St. Johns pull off an upset on this front?
