When did you first get involved with track and field? How long have you been running:
I started doing track and field in the 5th grade with a track club in California. I started out doing high jump, long jump, hurdles and sprints and then it just formed into doing the pentathlon.
What is a typical training week like for you?
On Mondays and Wednesday and Friday I will have a hard running day that will consist of 50m all the way up to 400m. Then I will go and practice pole vault after I do my running so that I get practice vaulting on tired legs like I would be in the decathlon. Then on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday I will lift and work on my throws and hurdles.
What are your goals for the upcoming track season?
My goals are to make junior nationals for pole vault and the decathlon. It is also a goal to make the junior world team for England in pole vault or the decathlon. I would also like to my coach’s state pole vault record.
How do you prepare yourself mentally for a race? Do you have any superstitions?
I will stand at the back of the runway or behind the blocks and visualize what I am going to do in my race or jump and then I will take a couple of deep breaths to calm myself down.
I have two superstitions and they are that I will always have a orange on my socks and I will usually have a little bit of chalk on my hands.
What does your season look like and will you be competing in any out of state track meets during the season or post high school season?
I will be doing the arcadia meet in California this year and junior nationals. And there are also lots of invites around the state with the big ones being chandler rotary and both the state meet and state decathlon meet.
What message would you tell younger runners who aspire to be at the top?
That it doesn’t matter if you have a bad meet or a bad start of the season because it only matters if you peak in performance during the big meets that you are doing during the later half of the year.
If you had to attribute your success to one thing, what would it be?
That my parents and my coaches are really supportive and believe that I can reach the goals I set for myself.
Do you have role models or mentors in track and field?
I would have to say that one role model I have is Trey Hardee. I have seen him compete a couple times and every time I have he always brings the crowd into the event he is doing. And he always seems to try as hard as he can every time he competes even if he is injured. And he seems like a really nice guy.
How many events do you compete in and which event is your favorite?
Since I am a decathlete I do 10 events and out of those 10 events my favorite would be pole vault.
What are 3 things we don't know about you?
1 I am a British citizen
2 I am an advanced scuba diver
3 One of my favorite sporting events is the tour de france.
Shout Outs?
Erwin Jones, Nick Hysong, my boy Johnny and all my other pole vault team mates.
