When did you first get involved with track and field?  How long have you been running:

I first got involved in Track and Field in 7th grade. I have been pole vaulting since the end of freshman year.

What is a typical training week like for you?

I spend an hour everyday in the weight room. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I do a sprinting workout and then spend some time working on my vaults. Tuesday and Thursday are lighter days and I spend the whole practicing working on vaults and form.

What are your goals for the upcoming track season?

I hope to PR with a height of at least 11’6.

How do you prepare yourself mentally for a race?  Do you have any superstitions?

I have to remind myself that I pole vault because I love it. However, before every vault, I always picture myself doing a perfect vault with perfect form. Sometimes I wear pink on meet days for luck.

What does your season look like and will you be competing in any out of state track meets during the season or post high school season?

I do not plan on vaulting any time after high school.

What message would you tell younger runners who aspire to be at the top?

What message would you tell younger runners who aspire to be at the top? Thinking about being better than everyone else can be overwhelming. Instead of trying to beat others, try to beat yourself. Eventually, you will get better and climb up to the top.

If you had to attribute your success to one thing, what would it be?

My parents have been a huge part of my success. They have always encouraged and supported me in my athletics and I would not be so engaged in vaulting if I did not have their support.

Do you have role models or mentors in track and field?

For me, I find inspiration from my fellow athletes. When I see them working above and beyond, it reminds me to be better.

How many events do you compete in and which event is your favorite?

I only compete in one event: pole vault. And I would have to say that that is my favorite.

What are 3 things we don't know about you?

  1. My coach used to call me “Cherry” because he didn’t know my real name at first and then it developed into a nickname.
  2. I play piano really well.
  3. I don't know how to whistle.

Best thing your coach ever said to you?

“Just vault.”

Shout Outs?

: My parents for always supporting me. Jase Penrod for always having a positive attitude and being willing to coach me on technique. Darian Gibbs for always making me laugh on my bad days at track.
