2 More to Qualify For State

The AIA surprised many people on Monday when they announced that emergency legislation had been passed to expand the state championship fields by two entrants in each individual event. Rather than the old system which qualified a field of 24 and two alternates who waited all day to see if they would be allowed to run, the AIA decided to make good use of the nine lane track at Mesa Community College and take some of the guessing out of qualifying for state. Those who were once considered alternates are now qualifiers and guaranteed to run. There are no longer any alternates, and qualifiers are still required to meet or exceed the provisional marks.
