When did you first get involved with track and field?  How long have you been running:

I first got involved with track and field my 7th grade year, when I joined the AZ Flames track club. I have now been running for 4 years.

What is a typical training week like for you?

A typical week of training for me involves stamina, speed, and sprint work on the track.  Long tempo runs on off days. My coach believes in plyometric work and stays after us with that all the time.

What are your goals for the upcoming track season?

This Track season my main goals are to help my team place as well as possible at the state track meet. I want to be a great leader and know I must do that through example. My teammates this year are all very hardworking, dedicated and talented. I believe we can be great. As a distance team our goal is to qualify our 4x800 for state. My personal goals for this season focus mainly on the mile and 3200, where I would like to go 5 flat and 11 flat.

How do you prepare yourself mentally for a race?  Do you have any superstitions?

Preparing mentally has always been a challenge, but this year I think I have finally begun to be comfortable with prerace prep.  I try and set aside some time the night before and visualize exactly how I’d like my race to go. Also talking race strategy with my dad and coach before the race helps me a lot.

What does your season look like and will you be competing in any out of state track meets during the season or post high school season?

This season so far has been a lot more successful for our team than last year.  A lot of things have changed for the better, including the meets we got to compete in. With support from lots of parents and new coaches we took a small team of qualifying athletes to Arcadia Invitational. It was an amazing experience! As for the end of this season I plan on competing at the meet of champions and the Great Southwest then resting.

What message would you tell younger runners who aspire to be at the top?

Running is a really hard sport. At times it’s not always fun like most team sports. If you want to be good you have to work super hard. I often tell my younger sister, it’s probably the toughest sport anyone could choose. In the end though, it is definitely the most rewarding.

If you had to attribute your success to one thing, what would it be?

I don’t think one thing could sum it up. The support from my coaches, family and teammates is the main reason I am where I am today. My parents taught me to work hard from the beginning and have pushed me to be the best that I can. I owe my success to everyone who has helped me get to where I am. I have a new coach this year. Coach Selby has really made an impression upon me with the level of commitment he has shown me and my teammates. He has made a huge commitment to us despite the fact that he is not even a fulltime teacher at our school. He works hard and is excited to help us no matter what his situation. I certainly have learned plenty from his example.

Do you have role models or mentors in track and field?

My female role model in track and field is Lolo Jones. I just love her attitude. I also like Galen Rupp. He was a gracious second placer.

How many events do you compete in and which event is your favorite?

I compete in 6 events. My favorites are the 1600m and the 4x800.

What are 3 things we don't know about you?
