State Meet Highlights - Saturday Division 1

By the time the lights went out at the Arizona State Meet to close out the 2013 track and field season, 4 records had fallen (2 at the State Meet), 26 top 20 marks (15 of them in the top 10) were recorded, 23 Arizona All Time top 5 marks and 10 new class records were added. Many athletes across the state and across divisions helped make this one of the best track and field seasons ever.

Bernie Montoya (Sr., Cibola) came back from his sub-9 minute 3200 meter run on Wednesday to run a 4:05.89 in the 1600. Montoya ran 3 - 64 second laps and stayed in the shadow of Nate Rodriguez (Jr., Corona del Sol) until the 300 meter mark in the final lap where he shot into the lead like a bullet to run a sub 60 final lap for the win. Rodriguez finished 2nd in 4:12.87 with Ryan Wesson (Sr., Sandra Day O'Connor) taking 3rd in 4:17.56.

Montoya ran the same type of strategic race in the 800 later in the evening as he tested his legs in the first 400. This time Logan Woolf (Sr., Highland) and Rodriguez went with him and hung on as best they could. By the time Montoya crossed the finish line he had broken the State Record, previously held by John Kline (Desert Vista, 2009), by a little more than a second with a time of 1:50.19. Woolf finished 2nd in 1:52.59 and Rodriguez took 3rd in 1:53.78. Twenty boys broke 2 minutes.

Ky Westbrook (Jr., Chandler) won 3 individual events starting the with shot put Wednesday evening. On Saturday Westbrook won the 100 dash in 11:45 for a US#3 and the 200 dash in 23.39 for a US#5 and a new State Record. Earlier in the month at the Chandler City Meet, Westbrook broke a 33 year old shot put record when she threw 47-9.

Paul Lucas (So., Mtn. Pointe) won the 100 meter dash in 10.44 for a US#20. Devon Allen (Sr., Brophy Prep) finished 2nd in 10.58 with Kejavon Moore (Sr., Mtn. Pointe) in 3rd in 10.76. All 9 boys went under 11 seconds.

Devon Allen wanted to finish his prep career with a win and came back to win the 200 meter dash in 20.98 for a US#11 with Lucas in second with a 21.10

Allen also won the 110 meter hurdles in 13.59 and the 300 meter hurdles in 36.74 for a US#5. Allen broke his own 110 hurdles record earlier in the season with a US#3 13.50 mark. Robert (Bobby) Grant (Jr., Brophy Prep) led in the 300 hurdles but lost it at the line finishing 2nd with a US#8 36.88.

Grant Sisseron (Sr., Horizon) broke 17-0 for the first time winning the State Championship with a US#6. Never before done at a State Meet, five pole vaulters jumped over16 feet putting them in the top 20 nationally. Cole Walsh (Sr., Brophy Prep) finished 2nd with a 16-9 for a US#8. Scott Marshall (Sr., Desert Vista) finished 3rd at the State Meet with a 16-6 but leads the way nationally with a 17-1 US#4. Bo Haddack (Sr., Deer Valley) and Nathan Hiett (Sr., Basha) both jumped 16-3 for a US#20.

Hayden McClain (Sr., Sandra Day O'Connor) jumped to US#2 after jumping 50-08.25. His mark puts him at #3 Arizona All Time.

Dylan Fischer (Sr., Desert Vista) was a 2 time State Champion after winning both the Discus (Wednesday) and the shot put with a 60-05.00

The Desert Vista Girls won the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 9:16.13. It was the first time the 4 girls ran together and after the race realized they were at US#16 and decided it might be a good idea to practice their hand-offs and head to the New Balance Nationals in a few weeks.

Missing from the State Meet, because of a season ending injury, was Salpointe Catholic senior Andy Trouard who has a top 10 mark in the 3200 with an 8:51.26 US#8.
