Virtual Challenge #1: 1-Mile Run - Results

Well, the results are in and we had 34 athletes share their virtual mile with us and we are so happy they did. We got a few video clips, plus runners from all over Arizona and New Mexico (Rio Rancho, represent!). From this group of 34, we had an individual girls' winner, individual boys' winner, a mixed-team winner, a girls' team winner, and a boys' team winner. We will show the results of all the athletes and let you who they are and where they are from.

To be clear, we were on the honor system here and so while you will see some Garmins show .9 or 1.01 miles, we are going with the times given to the nearest second. It's not perfect, but heck neither is what we are all going through right now with the season ending officially today.

Girls' Individual

Lauren Ping from Desert Vista was an early entry and clocked a blistering 4:48 mile. She was the sole individual girl entry, so gets the nod.

Boys' Individual

Chalen Lozano from Marana high school had the fastest mile in the group with a 4:38 showing.

Teammates, Adam Donaldson and Mason Steel from Rio Rancho High School took 2nd and 3rd with times of 4:55 and 5:24, respectively.

Zakry Kruk of Boulder Creek put some time on the treadmill for an entry, which got him a 4th place showing.

Mixed Team

The great Highland Hawks put a coed "Mixed" team together consisting of Cameron Macdonald (5:08), Wyatt Williams (5:04) and Emma Finchum (5:48).

Girls' Team

There were two entered girls' teams and the mighty ladies of Millennium took the crown. Faith Quine (6:15), Britney Perera (6:15), and Addison Readinger (5:33) outpaced the Sandra Day O'Connor contingent of Allena Fugatt (5:44), Amelia Long (6:45), and Olivia Grayson (6:22).

Boys' Teams

The Rio Rancho Boys stole the show and did some virtual running that edged out the second-place boys' team. Timothy Martinez (4:45), Dawson Gunn (4:41), and Michael Marcelli (4:49) were all under the 4:50-barrier, which was enough for the win.

The Desert Vista Boys were left out of my first version of this article because their videos were in my Facebook messenger and not in my Gmail account - my apologies. They look like they will take the silver now as they clocked a 4:31 by Noah Jodon, a 4:48 by Jacob Cardon, and a 5:06 by Ethan Bukowski

DV Boys

The "I Am Speed" crew of Michael Sexson (4:50), Cade Russo (4:52), and Carter Lewis (4:55) were the second-fastest AZ team in the group of 8.

Below are videos of their run. (First half of the run)

2nd half of the mile run.

The fourth-place team was the boys' from Millennium: Cayden Perez (5:08), John Weston (4:57), and Alexander Rafferty (4:41).

Taking fifth were the "Triple T's" from Glendale Prep: Trent Janssen (5:14), Trey Janssen (5:06), and Trevin Janssen (5:25).

6th and 7th place had the same time (15:56), but we gave the win to Shadow Ridge over "Mooms is Cool" (from Hamilton) because Curtis Aguirre (5:01) was the fastest time out of both teams. His teammates Andrew Retzlaff (5:14) and Jackson Bland (5:41) helped the trio dip under 16 minutes.

"Mooms is Cool" had Aiden Carson running a 5:10, Jacob Slater a close 5:13, and Jake Silva putting in a solid 5:33 effort. These fellas are also on the video above with "I Am Speed".

8th place went to the young men from Marana High school who were just a smidge over 16-minutes (16:01). Collin Maiyo (5:20), Russel Bauer-Woodman (5:31), and Caleb Salcido (5:10) represented Southern Arizona quite well.

That's it! That's our first virtual challenge results! Thanks again to all who put in some work both with your legs and with your running devices - we appreciate it.

We will have a new challenge tomorrow (Tuesday), which will be a bit easier to do, but hopefully, we'll get even more people involved!
